Dobele State Gymnasium (()) is a gymnasium (a pre-university high school) in Dobele, Latvia, founded in 1922. The official language of the school is Latvian, and students can also study English, Russian, and German. Students in grades 10 - 12 concentrate on either Mathematics and Science, Humanities, or Business and Commerce. History The Dobele city council, supported by Ministry of Education, decided to open a gymnasium (academically rigorous high school) in Dobele on January 7, 1921. Dobele city gymnasium was established one year later, on March 15, 1922. The first class began with 17 students—10 girls and 7 boys. The school became a cultural sanctuary known throughout the county. On September 26, 2003, Dobele city gymnasium was granted a status change from the Dobele city gymnasium to the Dobele State gymnasium by the President of Latvia Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga. Dobele Municipality ( lv, Dobeles novads) is a municipality in the historical region of Zemgale, and the Zemgale Planning Region in Latvia. The municipality was formed in 2009 by merging Dobele town and the Annenieki, Auri, Bērze, Biksti, Dobele, Jaunbērze, Krimūna, Naudīte, Penkule and Zebrene parishes, the administrative centre being Dobele. Leonīds Kalniņš
Lieutenant General Leonīds Kalniņš (born February 13, 1957, in Tomsk Oblast, RSFSR, Soviet Union) is a Latvian politician and general. He currently serves as the Commander of the Joint Headquarters (Latvia), Commander of the Joint Headquarters. He was born in 1957 in the Russian Pervomaysky District, Tomsk Oblast, Pervomaysky District and attended the Dobele R. Eihes Secondary School (now the Dobele State Gymnasium) in his youth. After graduating in 1975, he began his service in the Soviet Armed Forces, attending the Vilnius Higher Airborne Defense School. In 1990 he graduated from the Kharkov Military Academy in Ukraine. Andrejs Šeļakovs (born November 8, 1988) is a Latvian basketball player, who plays the center position. He is currently playing for BK Jūrmala of the Latvian league. Pro career Andrejs Šeļakovs started his pro career in 2006-2007 with ASK Rīga. Around that time he also was recruited by some major schools from NCAA Division 1, but he opted to stay in Europe.
