Dixon Springs is an unincorporated community in Smith County, Tennessee, United States. It is located along Tennessee State Route 25 (Dixon Springs Highway) between Carthage and Hartsville. Once a thriving area between Carthage and Hartsville, the community still has many antebellum homes and significant cemeteries of early settlers in the area, including the grave of Col. William Martin, pioneer of the region and eldest son of General Joseph Martin of Virginia. Dixona
Dixona is a historic house in Smith County, Tennessee, near Dixon Springs. It is one of the oldest homes in Middle Tennessee. The house was built in 1787–88 by Tilman Dixon, the Revolutionary War soldier who was Dixon Springs' first settler and namesake. His land holdings, received as a Revolutionary War land grant, totaled . In 1797, Louis Philippe, then Duke of Orleans and later King of France, stayed in Dixona together with his brothers, the Duke of Montpensier and Count of Beaujolais, during their travels in America. Joseph Martin, Jr. (1740–1808) was a brigadier general in the Virginia militia during the American Revolutionary War, in which Martin's frontier diplomacy with the Cherokee people is credited with not only averting Indian attacks on the Scotch-Irish American and English American settlers who helped win the battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens, but with also helping to keep the Indians' position neutral and from siding with the British troops during those crucial battles. Hartsville is a town in Trousdale County, Tennessee, United States. It is the county seat of Trousdale County, with which it shares a consolidated city-county government.
