Dirk Van Haaren
Dirk Johannes van Haaren (April 21, 1878, Amsterdam– June 30, 1953, Amsterdam) was a Dutch painter. Dirk Johannes van Haaren lived and worked in Amsterdam and in Sloten, North Holland. He was an autodidact and made watercolors as well as oil paintings. Is regarded as follower of the renowned Hague School. He painted mainly landscapes, often with water, windmills and cattle, views of the city of Amsterdam and, in his later phase, horses and riders. Sloten (North Holland)
Sloten (; ) is a village in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Amsterdam, and lies about 6 km west of the city centre.''ANWB Topografische Atlas Nederland'', Topografische Dienst and ANWB, 2005. Sloten became a separate municipality in 1816. Absorbed into Amsterdam in January 1921, Sloten (founded in the year 990) became the oldest part of Amsterdam (itself founded in 1254). Hague School
The Hague School is a group of artists who lived and worked in The Hague between 1860 and 1890. Their work was heavily influenced by the Realism (visual arts), realist painters of the French Barbizon school. The painters of the Hague school generally made use of relatively somber colors, which is why the Hague School is sometimes called the ''Gray School''. Precursors After the great periods of Dutch art in the Dutch Golden Age painting, Golden Age of the 17th century, there were economic and political problems which diminished activity in art. The fine arts in the Netherlands enjoyed a revival around 1830, a time now referred to as the Romanticism, Romantic period in Dutch painting. Guild Of Saint Luke
The Guild of Saint Luke was the most common name for a city guild for painters and other artists in early modern Europe, especially in the Low Countries. They were named in honor of the Evangelist Luke, the patron saint of artists, who was identified by John of Damascus as having painted the Virgin's portrait. One of the most famous such organizations was founded in Antwerp. It continued to function until 1795, although by then it had lost its monopoly and therefore most of its power. In most cities, including Antwerp, the local government had given the Guild the power to regulate defined types of trade within the city. Guild membership, as a master, was therefore required for an artist to take on apprentices or to sell paintings to the public. Onze Kunst Van Heden
Onze Kunst van Heden (Contemporary Artists/Our Art of Today) was an exhibition held in the winter of 1939 through 1940 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Due to the threat of invasion in the years leading up to World War II, the Netherlands' government stored many items from the Rijksmuseum's permanent collection. The resulting empty gallery space was utilized by contemporary Dutch artists to exhibit and sell their art. It was organized by the director of the Rijksmuseum . The show was open to all artists, with each artist allowed to enter four pieces. 902 artists exhibited 3,200 works of art in 74 rooms and cabinets of the Rijksmuseum. The Rijksmuseum () is the national museum of the Netherlands dedicated to Dutch arts and history and is located in Amsterdam.
