Diogenidae
The Diogenidae are a family of hermit crabs, sometimes known as "left-handed hermit crabs" because in contrast to most other hermit crabs, its left chela (claw) is enlarged instead of the right. It comprises 429 extant species, and a further 46 extinct species, making it the second-largest family of marine hermit crabs, after the Paguridae. Cancellus (crustacean)
''Cancellus'' is a genus of hermit crabs in the family Diogenidae. Members of this genus are most commonly found living in small crevices in the outer contintental shelf at mesophotic depths. They can be found living in rocks, sponges, and algae among other places. The genus has a cosmopolitan distribution. Four species are known from the western Atlantic (''C. heatherae'', ''C. ornatus'', ''C. viridis'', and C. ''spongicola''). Species ''Cancellus'' contains 17 species: * ''Cancellus canaliculatus'' (Herbst, 1804) * ''Cancellus frontalis'' Forest & McLaughlin, 2000 *''Cancellus heatherae'' * ''Cancellus investigatoris'' Alcock, 1905 * ''Cancellus laticoxa'' Forest & McLaughlin, 2000 * '' Cancellus macrothrix'' Stebbing, 1924 * ''Cancellus mayoae'' Forest & McLaughlin, 1998 * '' Cancellus ornatus'' Benedict, 1901 * ''Cancellus panglaoensis'' McLaughlin, 2008 * ''Cancellus parfaiti'' A. Clibanarius
''Clibanarius'' is a genus of hermit crabs in the family Diogenidae. Like other hermit crabs, their abdomen is soft-shelled and sheltered in a gastropod shell. Typically marine like all their relatives, the genus includes '' C. fonticola'', the only known hermit crab species that spends all its life in freshwater. The feeding rates of ''Clibanarius spp.'' change with temperature which, given their broad distributions, may have considerable consequences for the stability reef systems as sea temperatures rise in the future. They are omnivores, but mostly prey on small animals and scavenge carrion. Species As of 2009, about sixty species are recognized in ''Clibanarius''; new species are discovered and described occasionally. Others have been placed here at one time or another but are now assigned to other genera of Diogenidae, namely '' Bathynarius, Calcinus, Paguristes, Strigopagurus'' and '' Trizopagurus''. The ''Clibanarius'' species are: *''Clibanarius aequabilis ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Hermit Crab
Hermit crabs are anomuran decapod crustaceans of the superfamily Paguroidea that have adapted to occupy empty scavenged mollusc shells to protect their fragile exoskeletons. There are over 800 species of hermit crab, most of which possess an asymmetric abdomen concealed by a snug-fitting shell. Hermit crabs' soft (non- calcified) abdominal exoskeleton means they must occupy shelter produced by other organisms or risk being defenseless. The strong association between hermit crabs and their shelters has significantly influenced their biology. Almost 800 species carry mobile shelters (most often calcified snail shells); this protective mobility contributes to the diversity and multitude of crustaceans found in almost all marine environments. In most species, development involves metamorphosis from symmetric, free-swimming larvae to morphologically asymmetric, benthic-dwelling, shell-seeking crabs. Such physiological and behavioral extremes facilitate a transition to a sheltered ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Diogenes Pugilator
''Diogenes pugilator'' is a species of hermit crab, sometimes called the small hermit crab or south-claw hermit crab. It is found from the coast of Angola to as far north as the North Sea, and eastwards through the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea and Red Sea. Populations of ''D. pugilator'' may be kept in check by the predatory crab '' Liocarcinus depurator''. Description Like other hermit crabs, ''D. pugilator'' conceals its soft abdomen inside an empty gastropod mollusc shell; the abdomen is twisted to fit the contours of the shell. The carapace protects the anterior part of the crab and can be up to long; it is squarish in shape, has triangular projections along the front edge, and is clad with hairs on the front two corners. The eyes are on stalks which are about half as long as the width of the carapace. The left chela (claw) is very much larger than the right one, and both claws are covered with short hairs. The chelae and other legs can be contracted into the entrance of the ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
