Dinnington Colliery Band
__NOTOC__ The Dinnington Colliery Band is a traditional British brass band from Yorkshire, England, founded in 1904 and also known as the ''Dinnington Main and Middleton prize brass band'' for some of its history. Between 1982 and 1985 the band was sponsored by South Yorkshire Caravans, and 1987-1990 by Webster Mining Machinery. The band currently compete in the Third Section of the Yorkshire Region. The Dinnington Colliery Band consisted of 35 members aged between 7 and 80 from the former coal mining town of Dinnington in South Yorkshire, England. As in many traditional British mining towns, once the colliery closed in 1992 the band went into decline, ending up with only six members by 2009. Dinnington, South Yorkshire
Dinnington is a town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham in South Yorkshire, England. It is near to the towns of Worksop and Rotherham and cities of Sheffield and Doncaster. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Dinnington is the principal settlement in the civil parish of Dinnington St John's, which also includes the small satellite hamlets of Throapham and St John's. The Dinnington St John's parish is the most populous constituent of the St John's ward, which also includes the parishes of Laughton-en-le-Morthen, Firbeck, Letwell and Gildingwells. In 2001 this ward had a population of 11,476, with Dinnington St John's itself making up 9,161 of that figure. The population of the ward at the 2011 Census had increased to 12,517. Dinnington is about above sea level. In Britain, a brass band (known regionally as a silver band or colliery band) is a musical ensemble comprising a standardized range of brass and percussion instruments. The modern form of the brass band in the United Kingdom dates back to the 19th century, with a vibrant tradition of competition based around communities and local industry, with colliery bands being particularly notable. The Stalybridge Old Band (still in existence) was formed in 1809 and was perhaps the first civilian brass band in the world.
