Digit (unit)
The digit or finger is an ancient and obsolete non- SI unit of measurement of length. It was originally based on the breadth of a human finger. It was a fundamental unit of length in the Ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Hebrew, Ancient Greek and Roman systems of measurement. In astronomy a digit is one twelfth of the diameter of the sun or the moon. History Ancient Egypt The digit, also called a finger or fingerbreadth, is a unit of measurement originally based on the breadth of a human finger. In Ancient Egypt it was the basic unit of subdivision of the cubit. On surviving Ancient Egyptian cubit-rods, the royal cubit is divided into seven palms of four digits or fingers each. The royal cubit measured approximately 525 mm, so the length of the ancient Egyptian digit was about 19 mm. Dioptra
A dioptra (sometimes also named dioptre or diopter, from ) is a classical astronomical and surveying instrument, dating from the 3rd century BC. The dioptra was a sighting tube or, alternatively, a rod with a sight at both ends, attached to a stand. If fitted with protractors, it could be used to measure angles. Use Greek astronomers used the dioptra to measure the positions of stars; both Euclid and Geminus refer to the dioptra in their astronomical works. It continued in use as an effective surveying tool. Adapted to surveying, the dioptra is similar to the theodolite, or surveyor's transit, which dates to the sixteenth century. It is a more accurate version of the groma. Sosigenes () (fl. 1st century BC) was an Ancient Greek astronomer. According to Pliny the Elder's ''Natural History'' 18.210–212, Julius Caesar consulted him while he was designing the Julian calendar. Biography Little is known about him apart from Pliny's ''Natural History''. Sosigenes appears in Book 18, 210-212: Sosigenes is credited with work on the orbit of Mercury, which is described by Pliny in book 2, ''Natural History'': The introduction of the Julian year occurred in 46 BC. An ell (from Proto-Germanic *''alinō'', cognate with Latin ''ulna'') is a northwestern European unit of measurement, originally understood as a cubit (the combined length of the forearm and extended hand). The word literally means "arm", and survives in the modern English word "elbow" (arm-bend). The hand is a non-SI unit of measurement of length standardized to . It is used to measure the height of horses in many English-speaking countries, including Australia, Canada, Republic of Ireland, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. It was originally based on the breadth of a human hand. The adoption of the Inch#Equivalents, international inch in 1959 allowed for a standardized Imperial and US customary measurement systems#Units of length, imperial form and a Metric system, metric conversion. It may be abbreviated to "h" or "hh".
