Diego Chaves (boxer)
Diego Gabriel Chaves (born 7 April 1986) is an Argentine professional boxer who held the WBA interim welterweight title from 2012 to 2013. Early life Diego Chaves was born on 7 April 1986, in San Miguel, Argentina. Chaves had a stint as a football player in the junior divisions of Argentine club Velez Sársfield before dedicating his life to boxing. His grandfather, Rudecindo, was also a boxer who fought at middleweight in Argentina in the 1970s. Before turning pro, Chaves represented Argentina in the 2007 Pan American Games where he won the bronze medal in the welterweight category. He also participated in the Americas qualifying tournament for the 2008 Summer Olympics but was eliminated. Welterweight is a weight class in combat sports. Originally the term "welterweight" was used only in boxing, but other combat sports like Muay Thai, taekwondo, and mixed martial arts also use it for their own weight division system to classify the opponents. In most sports that use it, welterweight is heavier than lightweight but lighter than middleweight. The World Boxing Organization (WBO) is an organization which sanctions professional boxing bouts. It is recognized by the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF) as one of the four major world championship groups, alongside the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC), and International Boxing Federation (IBF). The WBO's headquarters are located in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
