Dew Sharman
Dewanchandrebhose Sharman (20 February 1965) is a Surinamese doctor and politician. He is a member of the National Assembly for the Progressive Reform Party (VHP). In 2015, he was first elected to the National Assembly by preferential votes. In 2020, Sharman was elected Vice Chairman of the National Assembly in an uncontested election. Biography Sharman was born on 20 February 1965 in the rural village of Paradise, Suriname. After graduating from high school, he went to the boarding school Zaailand Internaat in Paramaribo, and graduated from the Anton de Kom University as a medical doctor at the primary health level. Sharman started to work at the Regional Health Service (RGD). Sharman first tried to run for National Assembly for the VHP in the 2010 elections, however the VHP campaign was based on a vote for the main candidate, and he did not receive enough votes. 2020 Surinamese General Election
General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2020. The elections occurred concurrently with an economic crisis in Suriname, as well as the COVID-19 crisis. Electoral system The 51 seats in the National Assembly are elected using party-list proportional representation under the D'Hondt method in ten multi-member constituencies containing between two and seventeen seats. The ten electoral constituencies are coterminous with the ten administrative districts of Suriname. Voters also have the option of casting a preferential vote for one of the candidates on the chosen list in order to increase their place in the list, and the candidate(s) having obtained the most preferential votes in the lists that obtained seats are declared elected. Marinus Bee
Marinus Bee (1971) is a Surinamese politician, Chairman of the National Assembly of Suriname, and sports manager. As sports manager, he was chairman of the Albina Sports Foundation for ten years, and since 2014 chairman of S.V. Papatam. Bee has been elected to the National Assembly for the General Liberation and Development Party (ABOP) since 2010 for the Marowijne District. Biography Bee was born as the oldest child of four in Moengo, and spend his youth in Paramaribo. He graduated from the Anton de Kom University in law, and in 2020 was accredited Master of Business Administration. In 1999, Bee was invited to join the ABOP by Ronnie Brunswijk. He participated in the 2000 elections, but he only received 800 votes. In 2010 Bee was elected for the first time to the National Assembly. In 2014, Bee became Chairman of the Party Congress of ABOP. Soerjani Mingoen-Karijomenawi
Soerjani Mingoen (née Karijomenawi) is a Surinamese politician. She has been a member of the National Assembly since 2020, representing Commewijne District for the Progressive Reform Party (VHP). Biography Mingoen is of Javanese descent. She was a co-founder of the Music Education Center Commewijne (MECC) in 2010. Mingoen was originally a supporter of the Javanese party Pertjajah Luhur (PL). She was disappointed in this party when, against previous promises, it joined the first Cabinet (2010-2015) of President Desi Bouterse. She also opposed the PL's support of the Amnesty Law (2012), which prevented prosecution of the December murders. According to her, the PL had deceived the Javanese community. Gregory Rusland
Gregory Allan Rusland (born 9 November 1959) is a Surinamese politician. He served as Minister for Natural Resources between 2005 and 2010. In 2012 he became leader of the National Party of Suriname. Rusland has been a member of the National Assembly since 2015. Early life and career Rusland was born on 9 November 1959 in Paramaribo. He studied agricultural production at the Anton de Kom University of Suriname and received a bachelor's degree in 1982. He continued his studies in the same field at the University of Florida and obtained an MSc in 1984. Rusland obtained a further PhD at the same institute in 1987. Ronnie Brunswijk
Ronnie Brunswijk (; born 7 March 1961) is a Surinamese politician, businessman, footballer, convicted drug trafficker, former rebel leader, and the current Vice President of Suriname. Brunswijk served in the early 1980s as the personal bodyguard of Dési Bouterse, who overthrew the government in 1980 in a military coup. Brunswijk was discharged after asking for a raise, and denied back pay. In 1985, Brunswijk formed the Surinamese Liberation Army, better known as the Jungle Commando. Brunswijk was seeking to gain recognition and rights for the Maroon minority of the interior, descendants of runaway African slaves who had established independent communities in the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition, he wanted "to free Suriname from the military dictatorship." His forces fought against the national military under Bouterse in a civil war called the Surinamese Interior War.
