Soerjani Mingoen-Karijomenawi
Soerjani Mingoen (née Karijomenawi) is a Surinamese politician. She has been a member of the National Assembly since 2020, representing Commewijne District for the Progressive Reform Party (VHP). Biography Mingoen is of Javanese descent. She was a co-founder of the Music Education Center Commewijne (MECC) in 2010. Mingoen was originally a supporter of the Javanese party Pertjajah Luhur (PL). She was disappointed in this party when, against previous promises, it joined the first Cabinet (2010-2015) of President Desi Bouterse. She also opposed the PL's support of the Amnesty Law (2012), which prevented prosecution of the December murders. According to her, the PL had deceived the Javanese community. Mingoen followed the developments of the Progressive Reform Party (VHP) under the chairmanship of Chan Santokhi. National Assembly (Suriname)
The National Assembly (''De Nationale Assemblée'', ''The Assembly'', commonly abbreviated "DNA") is the Parliament, representing the legislative branch of government in Suriname. It is a unicameral legislature. The assembly has been situated in the former park house at the Independence Square in Paramaribo, after a fire destroyed the old building of representation on 1 August 1996. A reconstruction of the old building was completed in 2022. 2020 Surinamese General Election
General elections were held in Suriname on 25 May 2020. The elections occurred concurrently with an economic crisis in Suriname, as well as the COVID-19 crisis. Electoral system The 51 seats in the National Assembly are elected using party-list proportional representation under the D'Hondt method in ten multi-member constituencies containing between two and seventeen seats. The ten electoral constituencies are coterminous with the ten administrative districts of Suriname. Meerzorg
Meerzorg (Sranan Tongo: Ansu) is a town and resort (municipality) in Suriname, located on the eastern bank of the Suriname River, directly opposite the capital Paramaribo. Its population at the 2012 census was 12,405. Since 2000 it has been connected to Paramaribo by the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge, named after the former President Jules Wijdenbosch. History Meerzorg is named after the sugar plantation Meerzorg. The plantation was founded at the end of the 17th century, and was originally called Plantage Amsinck. Commewijne District
Commewijne is a district of Suriname, located on the right bank of the Suriname River. Commewijne's capital city is Nieuw Amsterdam. Tamanredjo is another major town, while Meerzorg is the most populated. The district has a population of 31,420 and an area of 2,353 km2. One of the most populated of Suriname's districts, Commewijne relies primarily on agriculture for its income, with plantations dating back to the first Dutch colonisation of the area in the 17th century.
