Designers Of Maltese Stamps
The designers of Maltese stamps have been creating their works for the last 150 years. The most prolific designer of Maltese stamps was Emvin Cremona, who designed most of Malta's stamps from the late 1950s to the 1970s. Dates indicate the years stamps with the artist's design were used (except for overprints). In some cases, the design of the stamp is entirely based on old paintings. When this occurred, the artist (such as Giuseppe Calì or Edward Lear) is listed as the stamp designer, even though the stamp was issued years after the painting was made. Malta
Malta ( , , ), officially the Republic of Malta ( mt, Repubblika ta' Malta ), is an island country in the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of an archipelago, between Italy and Libya, and is often considered a part of Southern Europe. It lies south of Sicily (Italy), east of Tunisia, and north of Libya. Emil Fuchs (artist)
Emil Fuchs (9 August 1866 – 13 January 1929) was an Austrian–American sculptor, medallist, painter, and author who worked in Vienna, London and New York. He painted portraits of Queen Victoria and Edward VII and was fashionable among London high society in the early 20th century. Biography Austria, Germany, Rome He was born in Vienna on 9 August 1866. Dorothy Wilding
Dorothy Frances Edith Wilding (10 January 1893 – 9 February 1976) was an English professional portrait photographer from Gloucester, who established successful studios in both London and New York. She is known for her portraits of the British Royal Family, some of which were used to illustrate postage stamps, and in particular for her studies of actors and celebrities which fused glamour with modernist elegance. Val Williams noted Wilding's combination of business savvy and deep understanding of aesthetic impact: 'nobody knew better than Dorothy Wilding the power of the photograph to create or destroy the desired image.' Gianni Vella
Gianni Vella (9 May 1885 – 3 September 1977) was a Maltese artist. After studying in Rome, he produced many religious works which can be found in many churches in the Maltese Islands, but he also produced some secular works including landscape paintings, cartoons and a stamp design. Biography Gianni Vella was born in Cospicua on 9 May 1885. He started painting at a young age, producing paintings and other decorations for his hometown's Immaculate Conception feast. He was an apprentice to the Italian artist Attilo Palombi for seven years, and during this time he worked on frescoes in various churches. Vella was eventually employed by the education department as a drawing master, and he illustrated Albert Laferla's book ''The Story of Man in Malta''. Luciano Micallef is a Maltese born abstract artist. He is one of most famous in Malta for abstract art & has multiple paintings all over the island. Early life He was born in Birkirkara, Malta on 1 November 1954. At age 10, he started studying art privately under Maltese artist Guzeppi Briffa, He later attended the Malta School of Art. He was awarded a scholarship by the Italian government to study art at the Accademia di Belli Arti di Firenze. He is considered a prominent Maltese artist of the 20th Century through his abstract art. Andrew Micallef
Andrew Micallef (born 7 February 1969) is a Maltese painter and musician. He is known for his highly detailed paintings of Maltese flora and fauna, landscapes, seascapes and architecture. He has held numerous solo exhibitions, and has also illustrated books and designed stamps. He is also a professional chromatic button accordion player. Biography Micallef was born on 7 February 1969, and he grew up in the city of Żebbuġ. He became familiar with the countryside and developed an interest in birds at a young age, through accompanying his father while hunting. He attended school in Żebbuġ before studying graphic design at the School of Art and Craft in Tat-Tarġa, Mosta. Micallef lives in Għargħur. Bertram Mackennal
Sir Edgar Bertram Mackennal (12 June 186310 October 1931), usually known as Bertram Mackennal, was an Australian sculptor and medallist, most famous for designing the coinage and stamps bearing the likeness of George V. He signed his work "BM". He was one of the few artists that King George V liked, and, as a result, was selected to create many sculptures of the late king. Some of his more notable works include statues of George on display in Delhi and Madras. Halfpenny Yellow
The Halfpenny Yellow is the first postage stamp issued by the Crown Colony of Malta. Depicting Queen Victoria, it was only valid for local postage and it was originally issued on 1 December 1860. It was the only stamp issued by Malta for two and a half decades, and during this period various reprints were made with differences in colour shade, perforation and watermark. When control of Malta's postal service was transferred to the island's colonial government on 1 January 1885, the stamp was withdrawn and it was replaced by a set of definitive stamps.
