Gianni Vella
Gianni Vella (9 May 1885 – 3 September 1977) was a Maltese artist. After studying in Rome, he produced many religious works which can be found in many churches in the Maltese Islands, but he also produced some secular works including landscape paintings, cartoons and a stamp design. Biography Gianni Vella was born in Cospicua on 9 May 1885. He started painting at a young age, producing paintings and other decorations for his hometown's Immaculate Conception feast. He was an apprentice to the Italian artist Attilo Palombi for seven years, and during this time he worked on frescoes in various churches. Vella was eventually employed by the education department as a drawing master, and he illustrated Albert Laferla's book ''The Story of Man in Malta''. In 1907, after being recommended by Palombi, he went to Rome to study at the British Academy and the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. Cospicua
Cospicua ( mt, Bormla ), also known by its titles Città Cospicua or Civitas Cottonera, is a double-fortified harbour city in the South Eastern Region of Malta. Along with Birgu and Senglea, it is one of the Three Cities, located within the Grand Harbour to the east of the capital city Valletta. With a population of 5,395 as of March 2014, it is the most dense city of the Three Cities. Etymology The Maltese name "Bormla" or ''Burmula'' derives from ''Bir Mula'' that means '' hewell of the Lord''. History Cospicua has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Its maritime facilities started during ancient times around the Phoenician era c. 600 BC. Prior to the 18th century it was known as Bormla, a name which is still in use. Maltese International Trade Fair Grounds
The Trade Fair Grounds, also known as the Trade Fairs and Exhibition Centre, is a former fairground in Naxxar, Malta. It hosted various exhibitions and fairs throughout the year, but was mostly known for being the venue for the annual Malta Trade Fair. Prior to the construction of the trade fair complex, the area had been part of the gardens of Palazzo Parisio. History The fairground hosted forty-nine editions of the Malta Trade Fair, from 1958 to 2006. After the ground rent expired, the Malta Trade Fair was moved to the Malta Fairs & Conventions Centre in Ta' Qali in 2007, and has been held there ever since. At this point, plans were made to redevelop the former fairground in Naxxar into a housing project, a local centre and an underground car park. In 2010, the Trade Fair Exhibitors Association took over the lease and applied to host the trade fair at the Naxxar complex again, but the licence was refused, resulting in a legal battle. The Church of the Nativity of Mary is a Roman Catholic baroque parish church located in Naxxar, Malta. History The Naxxar parish church was one of the 10 parishes, total of 12 when including the parishes of Mdina Cathedral and St Lawrence's church in Birgu, found to be existing by Bishop Senatore De Mello in 1436 and the villages of Mosta and Għargħur were subject to it. De Mello listed it as one of the 12 parishes of Malta and it was the first parish dedicated to Our Lady after that of the old cathedral in Mdina. In 1575, the parish of Naxxar had under its control a total of 36 churches – 14 in Naxxar, 5 in Għargħur, 12 in Mosta and 5 in the neighbourhood of these villages. The present church was built between 1616 and 1630 when there were 1200 inhabitants in Naxxar and it was felt that a larger church was needed. Carmelite Parish Church, Gżira
The Parish Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel or simply known as the Carmelite Church is a Doric Roman Catholic parish church located in Gżira, Malta. History The original chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel goes back to the early 20th century. The chapel was founded after an incident that took place on July 10, 1902, when two drunken sailors started throwing stones at a house near the bridge leading to Manoel island. One of the stones became stuck between the glass and an image of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in a small shrine on the wall of the house. Locals took this as a divine sign. The image and stone were carefully removed and preserved in the parish church of Our Lady Star of the Sea in Sliema. St Paul's Church, Safi
St Paul's Church, formally known as The Parish Church of the Conversion of Saint Paul, is a Roman Catholic parish church located in the village of Safi in Malta. The Parish Before Safi became an independent parish in 1598, it formed part of the medieval parish of Bir Miftuħ, which is nowadays part of the parish of Gudja. The parish of St Mary of Bir Miftuħ is one of the original medieval parishes that are mentioned by Bishop Senatore de Mello in 1436. In 1592, the villages of Safi, Mqabba, and Kirkop were merged into a single parish, with St Leonard in Kirkop becoming the parish church. On April 13, 1598 Safi became an independent parish. The church The original church of St Paul was much smaller than the present building. It was chosen from among five of the churches in the village to serve as the parish church. The present Baroque church, which is in the doric style, was built on the site of the original one between 1727 and 1744. It was consecrated on October 10, 1784.

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary is a Baroque Roman Catholic parish church located in the village of Għaxaq, Malta. History Records show that since 1511, a church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary stood where the current church stands today. When Għaxaq became an independent parish in 1626, the church became the parish church. The church was modified and enlarged multiple times, notably in 1655. The Parish Church of the Annunciation of Our Lord or simply Annunciation Church or in Maltese Il-Knisja tal-Lunzjata is a Roman Catholic Parish church located in the village of Tarxien in Malta. History The parish of Tarxien was created on May 29, 1592 by Bishop Tomás Gargallo. Works on the parish church started during the start of the 17th century, the traditional date being May 5, 1610. The church was built on the site of 3 respective chapels. It was recorded that by 1621 the construction was still in progress and that in 1627 works on the architecture was completed. By 1636 the church had two spires. In 1740 the side chapels were built, three on each side of the church. The Church of the Holy Trinity or simply Trinity Church is a Roman Catholic Parish church located in Marsa, Malta. History The foundation stone of Trinity church was laid on Sunday, October 20, 1909. The building of the church was entirely financed by benefactors Lorenzo Balbi and his wife Carmela née Ozzini, a wealthy childless couple from Valletta. The church was built on designs by Giovanni Domenico Debono with the master builder, Michele Mifsud. The construction of the church took 2 years and 9 months to be completed. The total cost amounted to an estimated cost of £7000. On April 19, 1913 the church was officially opened and declared a parish. St Francis Of Assisi Church, Valletta
St Francis of Assisi Church, dedicated to St Francis of Assisi ( mt, San Franġisk t'Assisi), in Valletta (the capital city of Malta), was built in 1598 and was completed by 1607. History After a few decades, however, the church developed structural defects and in 1681 it was built anew through the "munificence" of Grand Master Gregorio Carafa, whose coat of arms adorns the façade. The church was enlarged in the 1920s following plans by Emanuel Borg, which also included a dome. This implied the removal of some of the frescos by Giuseppe Calì, which were replaced with others by Gianni Vella. However the church still hosts precious works of art including paintings by Mattia Preti, Pietro Gagliardi and Filippo Paladini, as well as the titular statue of St Francis. St Augustine Church ( mt, il-Knisja ta' Santu Wistin) is one of the churches built during the creation of the new city of Valletta, Malta. Description The foundation stone was laid in 1571 according to the plan and guidance of Girolamo Cassar, architect of the Knights of St John. The church was rebuilt in 1765 according to a plan of Giuseppe Bonici. It was elevated to a parish church in 1968. St Augustine Hall, adjacent to the church, is part of the original plan of Cassar. The present church was consecrated by Giovanni Maria Camilleri on 1 July 1906. A number of the artefacts found inside the church are originals from the first church. Floriana ( mt, Il-Furjana or ''Il-Floriana''), also known by its title Borgo Vilhena, is a fortified town in the South Eastern Region area of Malta, just outside the capital city Valletta.
