''Descendant'' is a 2022 American historical documentary film directed by Margaret Brown, chronicling the story behind Africatown in Alabama, and the descendants of the last known enslaved Africans brought to the United States aboard the '' Clotilda''. The film premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it was picked up for wider distribution by Higher Ground Productions and Netflix. It received a theatrical release on October 21, 2022 and was available to stream on Netflix that day as well. Synopsis The wreckage of the '' Clotilda'' was found in 2019 in the Mobile River of Alabama, and the film explores the community of Africatown and the descendants of some of the last known enslaved Africans that were brought to the United States aboard her 40 years after slavery had already been deemed a capital offense. Margaret Brown is an American film director. Early life and education Brown was born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. A Murphy High School alumna, she earned her BA from Brown University with concentrations in Creative Writing and Modern Culture and Media, and her MFA in Film from New York University. Career Brown served as cinematographer for ''99 Threadwaxing'' in 1999 and director for ''Ice Fishing'' in 2000. Her full-length debut was '' Be Here To Love Me: A Film About Townes Van Zandt'' (2004) which chronicles the turbulent life of American singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt. ''Time Out'' magazine listed it at number 7 on its "50 Greatest Music Films Ever". She subsequently directed the feature documentary ''The Order of Myths'' a 2008 Sundance Film Festival selection about the segregated Mardi Gras celebration of Mobile, Alabama. The Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA) is an association of professional film critics, who work in print, broadcast and online media, based in Chicago, Illinois, United States. The organization was founded in 1990 by film critics Sharon LeMaire and Sue Kiner, following the success of the first Chicago Film Critics Awards given out in 1988. The association comprises 60 members. Since 1989, the CFCA has given out annual awards that recognize the best films in a variety of categories. The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures is a non-profit organization of New York City area film enthusiasts. Its awards, which are announced in early December, are considered an early harbinger of the film awards season that culminates in the Academy Awards. Origins The organization which is now a private organization of film enthusiasts has its roots in 1909 when Charles Sprague Smith and others formed the New York Board of Motion Picture Censorship to make recommendations to the Mayor's office concerning controversial films. It quickly became known as the National Board of Motion Picture Censorship.
