Deonar is a suburb of Mumbai. It has gained prominence for being the location of the largest dumping ground in Asia and also the location of city's largest abattoir, Deonar Municipal Abattoir. Important Landmarks India's largest abattoir is located in Deonar. It also has institutes like the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and International Institute for Population Sciences here. Deonar Dumping Ground
The Deonar dumping ground is a waste dumping ground or landfill in the city of Mumbai. Located in Shivaji Nagar, an eastern suburb of the city, it is India's oldest and largest dumping ground, set up in 1927. The dumping ground is managed by the city's civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (also known as Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai), which also manages two other dumping ground in the city; one in the neighbourhood of Mulund and one recently opened in Kanjurmarg. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on 6 August moved a proposal before the state environment department seeking environment clearance for its proposed waste-to-energy (WTE) plant at the Deonar dumping ground. The Deonar abattoir is an abattoir ( slaughterhouse) located in Deonar, in the eastern suburb of Mumbai, India. The abattoir used to be the largest in Asia in 1971. Govandi is a suburban neighborhood in eastern Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is near to Chembur, Deonar and Vashi. The main public modes of transport are auto-rickshaws, taxi and bus. Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is a multi-campus public research university in Mumbai, India. It is Asia's oldest institute for professional social work education and was founded in 1936 in then Bombay Presidency of British India as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work by the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. In 1944, the institute was officially renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and in 1964, the Government of India declared TISS as deemed university under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956. The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) serves as a regional Institute for Training and Research in Population Studies for the ESCAP region.
