David Markish (russian: Давид Маркиш, he, דוד מרקיש), is an Israeli prose writer, poet and translator who writes predominantly in Russian. Life David Markish was born in 1938 in Moscow, the Soviet Union to the famous Jewish poet Peretz Markish (1895-1952), murdered in the case of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee, mother – writer Esther Efimovna Lazebnikova-Markish (1912-2010), older brother – Shimon Markish (russian: Симон Перецович Маркиш) (1931-2003) – professor at the University of Geneva, half-sister ceramic sculptor ( en, Olga Rapay-Markish) (1929-2012). In January 1953, the Peretz Markish family was arrested and exiled to Kazakhstan Kzyl-Orda. In 1954, he returned to Moscow with his family. Waldemar Mordechai Wolff Haffkine ( uk, Володимир Мордехай-Вольф Хавкін; russian: Мордехай-Вольф Хавкин; 15 March 1860 Odessa – 26 October 1930 Lausanne) was a Ukrainian-French bacteriologist known for his pioneering work in vaccines. Born into a Jewish family in Odessa, Russian Empire, Haffkin was educated at the University of Odessa and later emigrated first to Switzerland, then to France, working at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, where he developed a cholera vaccine that he tried out successfully in India. He is recognized as the first microbiologist who developed and used vaccines against cholera and bubonic plague. He tested the vaccines on himself. Isaac Emmanuilovich Babel (russian: Исаак Эммануилович Бабель, p=ˈbabʲɪlʲ; – 27 January 1940) was a Russian writer, journalist, playwright, and literary translator. He is best known as the author of ''Red Cavalry'' and ''Odessa Stories'', and has been acclaimed as "the greatest prose writer of Russian Jewry." Babel was arrested by the NKVD on 15 May 1939 on fabricated charges of terrorism and espionage, and executed on 27 January 1940.
