Datong, Yilan
Datong Township () is a mountain indigenous township in the southwestern part of Yilan County, Taiwan. It is the second largest township in Yilan County after Nan'ao Township. Geography It is predominantly populated by Taiwanese aborigines of the Atayal Tribe. The township is dominated by rugged mountains and wide river valleys. Most settlements in the county are located along the Lanyang River valley which runs from the central mountains of Taiwan into the Lanyang Plain. * Area: 657.54 km2 * Population: 6,127 people (2014) Administration The villages of Datong include Daping, Fuxing, Hanxi, Leshui, Lunpi, Mao'an, Nanshan, Siji, Songluo and Yingshi. Township (Taiwan)
Townships are the third-level administrative subdivisions of counties of the Republic of China (Taiwan), along with county-administered cities. After World War II, the townships were established from the following conversions on the Japanese administrative divisions: Although local laws do not enforce strict standards for classifying them, generally urban townships have a larger population and more business and industry than rural townships, but not to the extent of county-administered cities. Under townships, there is still the village as the fourth or basic level of administration. As of 2022, there are totally 184 townships, including 38 urban townships, 122 rural townships and 24 mountain indigenous townships. 174 townships with 35 urban and 118 rural townships are located in Taiwan Province and 10 townships with 3 urban and 4 rural townships are located in Fujian Province. Taiping Mountain
Taiping Mountain or Taipingshan () is a mountain in Datong Township, Yilan County, Taiwan. It is one of Taiwan's three major forest recreation areas. At 1,950 meters (6,397 feet) above sea level, Taiping Mountain has nurtured an environment rich in ecological resources. In Taipingshan National Forest Recreation Area (), people go up the Taiping Mountain Virgin Forest Park to ride the Pong Pong Train that runs on a track remodeled from the lumber rail in the old days. One could still see the lumber-cutting facilities and operating tools such as the cable transport, aerial lift, lumber rail and steam-powered timber hoist that have remained. These offer visitors an opportunity to learn about the early forest industry in Taiwan as well as to see the natural landscape in high mountains. Mingchi National Forest Recreation Area
Mingchi National Forest Recreation Area () is a forest located in Datong Township, Yilan County, Taiwan. It is also named as the Pearl of the North Cross-Island Highway. Geology The forest is located at an altitude of 1,150-1,700 meters. Architecture The forest features an artificial lake surrounded by gardens designed with Chinese architectural style. It also consists of Ci Garden, Fern Garden, Stone Garden, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Garden and forest trails. It also consists of hostels and lookout pavilion. Qingshui Geothermal Power Plant
The Qingshui Geothermal Power Plant () is a geothermal power plant in Datong Township, Yilan County, Taiwan. History In 2017, Fabulous Power Co. won the right to use the land where the plant stands today. The construction of the power plant was completed in September 2021 and was approved to be commissioned on 27 October the same year. It was then commissioned on 23 November 2021. Technical specifications The power plant has an installed generation capacity of 4.2 MW. The temperature of the geothermal reservoir is around 180°C with a depth of 1,200–2,100 meters. It has an hourly power generation capacity of 3,150 kWh. Finance The power plant was constructed with a cost of NT$765 million. Yiyuan, the company that invested into the power plant, was granted the permit to operate the power purchase agreement for 20 years, in which it will pay the government NT$2 million annually. Taiwan Under Japanese Rule
The island of Taiwan, together with the Penghu Islands, became a dependency of Japan in 1895, when the Qing dynasty ceded Fujian-Taiwan Province in the Treaty of Shimonoseki after the Japanese victory in the First Sino-Japanese War. The short-lived Republic of Formosa resistance movement was suppressed by Japanese troops and quickly defeated in the Capitulation of Tainan, ending organized resistance to Japanese occupation and inaugurating five decades of Japanese rule over Taiwan. Its administrative capital was in Taihoku (Taipei) led by the Governor-General of Taiwan. Taiwan was Japan's first colony and can be viewed as the first step in implementing their " Southern Expansion Doctrine" of the late 19th century.
