Hans Gál
Hans Gál OBE (5 August 1890 – 3 October 1987) was an Austrian composer, pedagogue, musicologist, and author, who emigrated to the United Kingdom in 1938. Life Gál was born to a Jewish family in the small village of Brunn am Gebirge, Lower Austria, just outside Vienna, the son of a doctor, Josef Gál. In 1909, his piano teacher Richard Robert (who also taught George Szell, Rudolf Serkin and Clara Haskil) appointed Gál as a teacher when he became director of the New Vienna Conservatory. From 1909 to 1913, Gál studied music history at the University of Vienna under music historian Guido Adler, who published Gál's doctoral dissertation on the style of the young Beethoven in his own ''Studien zur Musikwissenschaft''. From 1909 to 1911, Gál studied composition privately with Eusebius Mandyczewski, who had been a close friend of Johannes Brahms, and with whom he later edited ten volumes of the Complete Edition of Brahms's works, published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1926. ''Die heilige Ente: ein Spiel mit Göttern und Menschen'' (German: ''The sacred duck: a play with Gods and men'') is an opera with a prelude and three acts by the composer Hans Gál (his Op. 15), to a libretto by Karl Michael Leventzow and Leo Feld. Written in 1920–21, it was premiered in Düsseldorf on 29 April 1923 under the baton of Georg Szell. Performance history The opera was a great success, and was immediately taken up by other German-language opera houses during the 1920s and early 1930s, including Breslau, Weimar, Aachen, Chemnitz, Kassel, Königsberg, Prague and Berlin. The Berlin and Breslau performances were undertaken by the director Heinz Tietjen. The critic Hanns Gutmann enthused over the Berlin production: "The score of this opera demonstrates how the orchestra has developed throughout the 19th century and is handled with the same virtuosity as Mahler and Strauss". Theater Osnabrück is a German theatre in Osnabrück, Germany. It operates under the auspices of the ''Städtische Bühnen Osnabrück gGmbH''. The primary performance venues are the ''Theater am Domhof'' (seating capacity 642) and the ''emma-theater'' (seating capacity 96). The roots of the company date back to 1771, with theatrical presentations at the Schloss Osnabrück. In 1780, productions shifted to two former aristocratic residences. Albert Lortzing had an official affiliation with the company from 1827 to 1833. In 1832, the city of Osnabrück took over the complex as its first municipal theatre.
