Darren Weir
Darren Weir (born 1999) is a Scottish international lawn and indoor bowler. Bowls career Weir won the Scottish under-18 title in 2016 and is a three times consecutive Scottish under-21 champion indoors (2018–20). In 2019, Weir was selected for the European Bowls Championships, where he won two silver medals. He made his debut at the indoor World Championships during the 2021 World Indoor Bowls Championship. He was twice defeated in the final of both the 2022 and 2023 Under 25 World Bowls Championship by fellow Scot Daniel Pool Daniel Pool (born 1999) is a Scottish indoor bowler. World Indoor Bowls Championships
The World Indoor Bowls Championship is an international bowls competition held annual at Potters holiday park in Hopton on Sea. The last week of the competition is televised live on BBC where the open singles and open pairs', women's singles and mixed pairs' finals are shown. History The competition was first held in 1979 in Coatbridge, Scotland as a men's singles only event. The first event was sponsored by Embassy Cigarettes. In 1986, the men's pairs competition was added to the championship. In 1988, a rule change allowed women to compete for the first time and the women's singles competition was created. This rule change also changed expanded the men's singles and pairs competition and both become open tournaments. In 1989, the championships moved to the Guild Hall in Preston, England And Churchill Insurance took over the sponsorship. 2024 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 2024 World Indoor Bowls Championship was the 2024 edition of the World Indoor Bowls Championship, held at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, from 5-21 January 2024. The event is organised by the World Bowls Tour and will be televised by the BBC and YouTube. The event is being sponsored for the second consecutive year by Imagine Cruising. Jamie Walker and Katherine Rednall were the men's and women's defending champions respectively. In an all-Scottish final, two-time champion and number 4 seed Stewart Anderson beat the six-time champion Alex Marshall MBE. Marshall received a wild card to compete and was unseeded because his form had dropped over the last few years but produced outstanding performances to reach the final, including a faultless semi-final win over friend and rival Paul Foster MBE. European Bowls Championships
The European Bowls Championship formerly the European Bowls Team Championships is a biennial continental lawn bowls tournament for European nations. From its inauguration in 1997 until September 2021, the tournament was organised by the European Bowls Union (EBU). In September 2021, the members of what was the "European Bowls Union" (E.B.U.) voted unanimously, to rebrand and be replaced by the newly formed, limited company, Bowls Europe Ltd (registered in Scotland). The competition now features the traditional four disciplines of singles, pairs, triples and fours. 2021 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 2021 Just World Indoor Bowls Championship took place at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, from 8–24 January 2021. The event was organised by the World Bowls Tour, televised by the BBC and streamed live on YouTube. The event was played behind closed doors and there was no under-25 competition due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a consequence of the pandemic there were no overseas players involved. A fairer system was devised in the Open pairs whereby all competitors would face a first round match and there would be no byes. Late changes had to be made to the draw, with world number one and 2nd seed Nick Brett unable to participate because he broke his arm following an accident playing golf. 2022 World Indoor Bowls Championship
The 2022 Just World Indoor Bowls Championship took place at Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, from 7–23 January 2022. The event is organised by the World Bowls Tour, and will be televised by the BBC and streamed live on YouTube. The Open Singles was won by the sixth seed Les Gillett who overcame five times champion Paul Foster. Gillett won the first set by virtue of overtaking Foster's lead during the final ends. Foster comfortably won the second set before Gillett won the tie break. Katherine Rednall won a record breaking fourth women's singles title. In the open pairs Stewart Anderson and Darren Burnett defeated defending champions Mark Dawes and Jamie Chestney to win their second title together. The 2023 Imagine Cruising World Indoor Bowls Championship took place at Potters Resort, Potters Leisure Resort, Hopton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, England, from 6 to 22 January 2023. There were two preliminary round ties in the open singles, with Jason Banks (bowls), Jason Banks beating Darren Weir and Jon Wilson defeating Scott Edwards (bowls), Scott Edwards. Banks went on to reach the final where he met Jamie Walker (bowls), Jamie Walker. This was first time that the open/men's singles final featured two unseeded players since seeds were introduced in 1988. Previously eight unseeded players had reached finals (5 went on to win) but all eight had played seeded players in the final.
