The Champions Sprint, registered as the Victoria Racing Club Stakes, is a Victoria Racing Club Group One Thoroughbred horse race for horses aged three years old and over, under weight for age conditions, over a distance of 1200 metres held at Flemington Racecourse, Melbourne, Australia on the last day of the VRC Spring Carnival. Total prize money for the race is A$3,000,000. History The race is considered one of the major sprints of the spring racing calendar. Flemington Racecourse
Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is the world's richest handicap and the world's richest 3200-metre horse race. The racecourse is situated on low alluvial flats, next to the Maribyrnong River. The area was first used for horse racing in March 1840. Bivouac (foaled 4 November 2016) is a multiple Group 1 winning Australian thoroughbred racehorse. Background Bivouac is a home-bred stallion by Godolphin. Vain (horse)
Vain (5 September 1966 - 25 December 1991) was a champion Thoroughbred racehorse that dominated Australian sprint racing in the period 1968–70, when he won 12 of the 14 races he contested and ran second in the other two. He went on to become a leading sire in Australia. The chestnut colt was sired by the leading sire Wilkes (FR), and his dam, Elated, was by the good sire Orgoglio (GB), who sired 21 stakes winners that had 37 stakes wins. Elated was a good racemare that won 10 races, including eight in Melbourne. Although she produced several foals, Vain was her only stakes winner. Racing career Vain was bred and raced by Melbourne brothers Walter, Fred, and George Johnson and was trained by Jim Moloney in the Melbourne suburb of Mordialloc. Hareeba
Hareeba (1990–1997) was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who won six Black Type races including two Group One (G1) sprints in the 1990s. He was a bay gelding sired by Al Hareb (won GB William Hill Futurity Stakes) out of Headford Lass (GB) (Red Alert (IRE)-Deep Company (GB)). Racing career Hareeba had three starts as a two-year-old without success but returned at three, and, after two further defeats, broke his maiden at Yarra Glen on 28 October 1993. This was followed with wins at Ballarat, Moonee Valley, and Flemington. In his two city wins, he broke the course record for 1,200 metres in winning by nine lengths at Moonee Valley, and defeated the following year's Caulfield Cup winner, Paris Lane, by three lengths at Flemington. Takeover Target (27 September 1999 – 20 June 2015) was a much-travelled Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who won top sprinting races in each of the five major cities in Australia as well as in the United Kingdom, Japan, and Singapore. He was owned and trained by Joe Janiak, a former Queanbeyan, New South Wales, taxi driver, and was ridden by Sydney-based jockey Jay Ford in all but two race starts. He was purchased for A$1,250 plus $125 GST in July 2003 and earned $6,028,311 in prize money. Glamour Puss (foaled 5 October 2000 – 2016) was a New Zealand thoroughbred racemare who also raced in Australia. She was trained by Paul O'Sullivan in New Zealand and Danny O'Brien in Australia. Sired by Tale of the Cat to dam Centaine, she was the winner of two Group One races in 2005, including The Goodwood and Salinger Stakes. Black Caviar (foaled 18 August 2006) is a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who was undefeated in 25 races, including 15 Group Ones, an Australian record. She was the 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 WTRR World Champion Sprinter. Black Caviar was trained by Melbourne-based trainer Peter Moody. Buffering (foaled November 5, 2007) is a retired Australian Thoroughbred racehorse. A gelding, Buffering is one of the highest-money-earning horses in Australian racing history, having surpassed $7,000,000 in earnings on March 26, 2016, by winning the 2016 Al Quoz Sprint at the Meydan Racecourse during the 2016 Dubai World Cup race meeting.
