Darbėnai
Darbėnai is a small town in Klaipėda County, in northwestern Lithuania. According to the 2011 census, the town has a population of 1,461 people. It is located 16 km north of Kretinga. Darbėnai is the capital of Darbėnai eldership. History Darbėnai was first mentioned in 1591 but it is thought that the village was established in 1566 during the Wallach reform. According to Simonas Daukantas in 1550 it was still a Palanga forest (''Palangos giria''). In 1621 Jan Karol Chodkiewicz built the first wooden church in the town. In 1701 the duke of Courland granted the privilege of trade to the town which was confirmed by the king Augustus II the Strong. Since 1730 Darbėnai was started to call a town. In the beginning of the 19th century the first parish school was established. In 1842 the current Catholic church named after Saint Apostles Peter and Paul was built. Mindaugas Rojus (born 24 January 1981 in Darbėnai, Kretinga district, Lithuania) is a Lithuanian opera singer (tenor / baritone), a soloist of Klaipėda State Music Theatre, and a member of a stage duo ''Žemaitijos perlai'' (Samogitia's Pearls). Biography Graduated high school of Darbėnai. In Klaipėda, Stasys Šimkus Conservatory he studied choral conducting (class of A. Purlienė) and solo singing (class of V. Balsytė). In 2001 and 2002, attended the Lithuanian Academy of Music preparatory studies (class of prof. Vladimiras Prudnikovas). Since 2004, he studied at Klaipėda University's Faculty of Arts Singing Department (class of M. Gylys, prof. Eduardas Kaniava), gained a master's degree. David Wolffsohn
David Wolffsohn ( yi, דוד וואלפסאן; he, דוד וולפסון; 9 October 1855 in Darbėnai, Kovno Governorate – 15 September 1914) was a Lithuanian-Jewish businessman, prominent early Zionist and second president of the Zionist Organization (ZO). Biography David Wolffsohn was born in Darbėnai, Lithuania (then Russian Empire) to religious parents, Isaac and Feiga. He received an observant religious education from his parents and in 1872 was sent to Germany to avoid conscription into the Russian army. He moved to Memel, East Prussia, to leave his family, where he met Rabbi Isaac Rülf. Rülf accepted him as a student and taught Wolffsohn the German language, mathematics, and introduced him to the Hovevei Zion movement. Then he moved to Lyck (today Ełk) where he met David Gordon. Joshua Bloch (December 9, 1890 – September 26, 1957) was a Lithuanian-born Jewish-American rabbi and librarian. Life Bloch was born on December 9, 1890 in Dorbian, Kovno Governorate, the son of Baer-Moses Bloch and Necha Stoch. Bloch immigrated to America in 1907 and got his secondary education in New York City, New York. He then attended Hebrew Union College from 1911 to 1916, the University of Cincinnati from 1912 to 1916, Dropsie College from 1913 to 1914, Columbia University from 1913 to 1915, the Jewish Theological Seminary from 1914 to 1915 and the Union Theological Seminary from 1914 to 1915, and New York University from 1914 to 1918. Kazys Maksvytis (born 15 June 1977) is a Lithuanian professional basketball coach who is currently the head coach for Lithuania men's national basketball team and Žalgiris Kaunas.
