Danny!
Daniel Keith Swain (born August 18, 1983), known mononymously as Danny!, is an American rapper, record producer, singer, and composer. Swain rose to prominence after his debut performance on '' Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'', where he premiered his song "Evil". After joining Okayplayer Records, Danny! released his album ''Payback'', cited by AllMusic as one of the best hip-hop releases of the year. In 2013, ''Ebony'' magazine listed Swain among other rising artists in its "Leaders of the New School" piece, calling Swain one of a handful of "innovators". Swain has composed background music that has since been placed in numerous motion pictures and television programs, most notably FOX's animated series ''Bob's Burgers'' for which Swain was awarded an Emmy plaque for his contributions to an episode that won in the Outstanding Animated Program category at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2017. Early life Swain, the only son of military parents, was born in Killeen, Texas an ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Charm (album)
''Charm'' is the critically acclaimed third studio album from American rapper/record producer Danny!, and the first of his records to be released commercially. As evidenced in the title, ''Charm'' was a huge milestone in Danny!'s career; after two unsuccessful attempts to make a name for himself in the music world (2004's '' The College Kicked-Out'' and 2005's '' F.O.O.D.''), the record unanimously won rave reviews, culminating in the inclusion of the album on the 49th Annual Grammy Awards short list and, eventually, a record deal with Definitive Jux Records. Widely regarded as one of the strongest entries in his discography (rivaled by 2008's '' And I Love H.E.R.''), ''Charm'' helped Danny! achieve a moderate buzz in the underground hip-hop community and become South Carolina's most heralded hip-hop artist to date. The song "Cafe Surreal" from this album would go on to become a signature tune in commercial bumpers for the MTV early morning video countdown program aMTV, being p ... The College Kicked-Out
''The College Kicked-Out'' is the debut album from American rapper/producer Danny! Originally slated for an October 12 release date, ''The College Kicked-Out'' finally saw the light of day on November 2 after being delayed by bootlegging. Overview Both the album's cover art and title are a tongue-in-cheek reference to the 2003 grade-altering controversy at Claflin University that resulted in Danny! being accused of not only orchestrating the entire operation, but of accumulating a substantial amount of money from tampering with the institution's academic records; Danny! was subsequently expelled. ''The College Kicked-Out'' was just twelve days shy of being released an approximate year after Danny!'s expulsion from the university. Contrary to the title, the album never actually gives any insight to the events leading up to Danny!'s expulsion from Claflin; rather, ''The College Kicked-Out'' is, at face value, a formulaic hip-hop record (Danny! slyly references such a formula a ... Payback (album)
''Payback'' is the seventh studio album of American rapper/producer Danny Swain, released under the name Danny!. The album was recorded primarily during the summer of 2011 shortly after '' Where Is Danny?''s re-release via Interscope Records. After leaving Interscope, Swain subsequently signed to Okayplayer Records, and the album was released in late September 2012. ''Payback'' was promoted by an appearance by Swain on '' Late Night With Jimmy Fallon'' alongside the Roots one week prior to the record's release. The album includes featured performances by various recording artists, and one by actress Amber Tamblyn. Overview Background Shortly after Swain's previous album '' Where Is Danny?'' was re-released in 2011, Swain began to compose a satirical project to expose how listeners were more interested in music by high-profile names than in music of substance. Swain spent the remainder of 2011 assembling tracks intended for a digital download album to be released through In ... Dream, Fulfilled
Danny!'s second instrumental hip hop album, ''Dream, Fulfilled'', was released on April 23, 2007 (see 2007 in music) under the American rapper/producer's 1911 Music/Badenov Records imprint. The record is a sequel to Danny's 2006 instrumental album '' Dream, Interrupted'' and, like its predecessor, was initially released under Danny's birth name ( Daniel Swain) solely in the United Kingdom for reasons still undetermined. The album cover, as well as the tray card and artwork contained within the liner notes, features various photographs of Ugandan youth. Overview ''Dream, Fulfilled'', like ''Dream, Interrupted'' before it, begins with an excerpt from "Cry Of A Dreamer" by The Sylvers. The album's tagline -- "23 years. 23 ''more'' beats. One man. One hour. One destiny."—also bears similarities to that of ''Dream, Interrupted''. The tagline is once again misleading as "Intro" is not an instrumental, giving ''Dream, Fulfilled'' a total of 22 full-fledged beats. Danny has long ... Dream, Extinguished
''Dream, Extinguished'' is an instrumental hip hop album by American producer/rapper Danny! It is the third and allegedly final installment in Danny's famed ''Dream...'' instrumental series and, like its predecessors, bears Danny's anthroponym on its cover—an ominous all-black sleeve—rather than his stage name in an effort to distinguish himself from Daniel Swain the record producer and Danny!, his rapper alter ego. Originally intended for an April release, ''Dream, Extinguished''s date was moved forward to January 29 to compensate for the unforeseen delay of '' And I Love H.E.R.'', his fifth studio album. Unlike the first two entries in the ''Dream...'' trilogy, a promotional tagline for ''Dream, Extinguished'' does not exist. Cancellation and subsequent release A mere day before it was set to be released to the market in 2008, ''Dream, Extinguished'' was withdrawn by Danny himself, much to the surprise of anticipating fans. For reasons unknown Danny abandoned the entir ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Dream, Interrupted
''Dream, Interrupted'' is an instrumental hip hop album by American rapper/producer Danny!, and the fourth release under Danny's personal 1911 Music/Badenov Records imprint. ''Dream, Interrupted'' was released exclusively in the United Kingdom (under Danny's birth name, Daniel Swain) on August 14, 2006 (see 2006 in music) prior to seeing a stateside release the following year. Overview Prior to the release of ''Dream, Interrupted'', Danny had released three studio albums (''The College Kicked-Out'', '' F.O.O.D.'' and ''Charm'') that showcased both his rapping and his production skills; ''Dream, Interrupted'' helped shift the spotlight solely on Danny's production. Presumably, the record was released under Danny's full name in an effort to distinguish himself from Danny!, his rapping alter ego. The title itself is an allusion to Danny's well-publicized 2006 "retirement" in which he decided to briefly discontinue, or "interrupt", his long-time goal, or "dream", of hitting it big ... Okayplayer Records
Okayplayer is an online hip-hop and alternative music website and community, described by ''Rolling Stone'' as a "tastemaker" and "an antidote to dull promotional Web sites used by most artists". The community was founded by The Roots' drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson and author Angela Nissel as a loose musical collective in 1987, and evolved into an online community in 1999. In 2004, Questlove launched Okayplayer Records as a spin-off of the community, in partnership with Decon. After a near-decade hiatus, the label was rebooted in 2012 with Danny! as its flagship artist. This community is made up of recording artists (who keep their official internet homes there), visitors to the site, and individuals who post on the site's message board, the most popular feature of the site. All of the artists and staff, as well as those who post to the site's messageboard, are considered "okayplayers," or "OKPs" for short. Okayplayer was one of the first online hubs through which fans co ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Definitive Jux
Definitive Jux was a record label based in New York City. It was co-founded in 1999 by El-P and Amaechi Uzoigwe. History Definitive Jux was initially known as Def Jux. However, popular hip hop label Def Jam Recordings sued Def Jux over the name similarity in 2001. This lawsuit was settled out of court and the name was officially changed to Definitive Jux. In February 2010, El-P announced that the label, although it will carry on selling its catalog and merchandise, would be put "on hiatus" as a traditional record label, and that it would be going through some changes in order to keep up with the evolution of the music industry. He also announced that he was stepping down as artistic director of Definitive Jux to focus on producing and being a full-time artist.
