Iringa Region (''Mkoa wa Iringa'' in Swahili) is one of Tanzania's 31 administrative regions. The region covers an area of . The region is comparable in size to the combined land area of the nation state of Guinea Bissau. Iringa Region is bordered to the east by Morogoro Region and south by Njombe Region. Geita is a town and regional capital of Geita Region in northwestern Tanzania. The town is known for its gold trade. Geita, with a population of 99,795 (2012 census). It is located in the centre of a gold mining area. In March 2012 it became the administrative headquarters of the newly created Geita Region. History Geita first came into prominence as the site of a German colonial gold mine. A German gold prospector discovered the mineral in the early 1900s in the hills surrounding modern-day Geita town. Polycarp Pengo (born 5 August 1944) is a prelate of the Catholic Church who was Archbishop of Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, from 1992 to 2019. A bishop since 1983, he was made a cardinal in 1998. Biography Polycarp Pengo was born on 5 August 1944. He was ordained a priest in 1971, he studied Moral Theology in Rome at the Pontifical Lateran University, obtaining a doctorate in 1977. He taught Moral theology in Kipalapala Theological Seminary for a short time, and then became the first Rector of Segerea Theological Seminary in Dar-es-Salaam up to 1983. He was made Bishop of Nachingwea (now Lindi) in 1983, and of Tunduru-Masasi in 1985. Aloysius Balina (21 January 1945 – 6 November 2012) was bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Shinyanga, Tanzania.
