Dale Swenson (born March 2, 1957) is a Democratic Party (United States), Democratic former member of the Kansas House of Representatives from the 97th district in Wichita, Kansas, Kansas. From 1995 to 2008, he served as a Republican Party (United States), Republican lawmaker; in 2009, he began a single two-year term as a Democrat. He was unseated on November 2, 2010, by the Democrat-turned-Republican Leslie Osterman, a retired health systems analyst from Wichita, Kansas, Wichita. In 2012, Swenson lost a rematch with Osterman. He received 2,899 votes (41.6 percent) to Osterman's 4,068 votes (58.4 percent). Leslie Osterman
Leslie Gene Osterman (July 29, 1947 – February 18, 2021) was a health systems analyst from Wichita, Kansas, who was a Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives from District 97 in southwestern Wichita County. First elected on November 2, 2010, Osterman lost races for the same seat in 2000 and 2008, when he ran each time as a Democrat. Having switched parties, new Republican Osterman in 2010 unseated the veteran Democratic Representative Dale Swenson, 2,341 (53.8 percent) to 2,007 (46.2 percent). According to Osterman's website, Swenson supported an 18 percent increase in state taxes and a 10 percent hike in the Kansas state budget. Kansas () is a state in the Midwestern United States. Its capital is Topeka, and its largest city is Wichita. Kansas is a landlocked state bordered by Nebraska to the north; Missouri to the east; Oklahoma to the south; and Colorado to the west. The Kansas Democratic Party is the affiliate of the Democratic Party in the state of Kansas and one of two major parties in the state, alongside the Republicans. The chair of the party is Vicki Hiatt. The party currently controls the state's governorship, lieutenant governorship and Treasurer office, as well as one seat in the state's U.S. House delegation. It is currently in the minority in both houses of the state legislature.
