Anne Cupples
Anne Jane Cupples, ''née'' Douglas (4 January 1839 – 14 November 1896) was a Scottish writer and populariser of science. She was married to a famous maritime novelist George Cupples, and after his death moved to be with her sisters in New Zealand, where she died in 1896. She wrote around fifty books in total, mostly intended for children, under the name Mrs George Cupples. Early life Anne was born on 4 January 1839 at 34 Gilmore Place, Edinburgh, the second daughter and third of seven children of Archibald Douglas of Morton, and his wife, Caroline Montague Douglas, ''née'' Scott. On 18 May 1858, Anne, aged 19, married George Cupples, a respected literary figure and breeder of Scotch deerhounds, aged 36. In 1859, her father died at the age of 55, and her widowed mother continued as planned to New Zealand, where she established a small school at Pelichet Bay, near Dunedin. Claire Cupples
Claire Georgina Cupples (''nee'' Wilson) is a Canadian microbiologist. She is a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at Simon Fraser University. Her research focuses on the causes, consequences and prevention of mutations in microbes and in humans. Career After conducting her postdoctoral at the University of California, Los Angeles, Cupples accepted an assistant professor position at Concordia University in 1989. Her research at Concordia focused on DNA and molecular biology. She stayed in this position until the 1997-98 academic year, when she was appointed acting chair of the Biology Department. By 2002, she was promoted to Full professor. In 2003, Cupples accepted a position as a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at the University of Victoria (UVic). George Cupples
George Cupples (2 August 1822 — 17 October 1891) was a Scottish journalist and a writer, who became famous at the end of 19th century for his maritime novels. In particular, his novel ''The Green Hand: adventures of a naval lieutenant'' was considered "one of the best sea stories ever written" at the time. His wife, Anne Jane Cupples, also became a famous writer of juvenile and children books. Biography George Cupples was born on 2 August 1822 in Legerwood manse in south-east Scotland in the family of Reverend George Cupples. His paternal ancestors were Calvinistic ministers for at least three generations, and Cupples was intended for the same profession. Cupples started his education at the ministry, then studied at Dr. Munro's academy in Stirling. Samuel Cupples (September 13, 1831 – January 6, 1912) was an American businessman and entrepreneur based in St. Louis, Missouri. Early life Cupples was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to James and Elizabeth (Bingham) Cupples. His parents were both from County Down, Ireland and came to the United States in 1814. James Cupples was an educator and established a school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. When he was 15, Samuel moved to Cincinnati and began working for Albert O. Taylor in a woodenware business. Business career Cupples moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1851 and established his own woodenware business under the name of Samuel Cupples & Company. In 1858, Cupples partnered with Thomas Marston and the business became Cupples & Marston. The business was very successful, but the partnership was dissolved twelve years later.
