Cuba Davis Cup Team
The Cuba men's national tennis team represents Cuba in Davis Cup tennis competition and are governed by the Federación Cubana de Tenis de Campo. Cuba currently competes in the Americas Zone Group III. They played in the World Group in 1993. History Cuba competed in its first Davis Cup in 1924. Juan Pino
Juan Antonio Pino Pérez (born 3 July 1965) is a former professional tennis player from Cuba. Biography Pino, who comes from Pinar del Río in western Cuba, began playing tennis at the age of 10 and trained in Havana. A right handed player, Pino holds the record for most matches won for the Cuba Davis Cup team, a total of 34, in a career spanning 12-years from 1987 to 1999. His 26 ties for Cuba includes World Group participation in 1993, which was Cuba's first ever appearance in the main competition, having qualified through the expulsion of the Yugoslav team due to the Bosnian War. Cuba's debut World Group fixture came against Sweden in Kalmar and Pino was picked to play Stefan Edberg in the first rubber. Pino was beaten comfortably by Edberg and also lost a dead rubber to Nicklas Kulti, as Sweden won all matches in the tie. Sandor Martínez
Sandor Martínez-Breijo (born 21 March 1981) is a Cuban former professional tennis player. Martínez holds the Cuban record for the most Davis Cup appearances, featuring in a total of 29 ties between 1998 and 2009. He is the team's most successful doubles player, with 18 wins in doubles rubbers, to go with his four singles wins. At the 1998 Central American and Caribbean Games, Martínez won a gold medal for Cuba in the team event, alongside Lázaro Navarro Lázaro Navarro-Batles (born 28 January 1974) is a Cuban-Mexican former professional tennis player. Mario Tabares (born July 22, 1965) is a former professional tennis player from Cuba. He enjoyed most of his tennis success while playing doubles. During his career, he won one doubles title. He achieved a career-high doubles ranking of world No. 106 in 1993. The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis. It is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format. It is described by the organisers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team. The competition began in 1900 as a challenge between Great Britain and the United States. By 2016, 135 nations entered teams into the competition. 1924 International Lawn Tennis Challenge
The 1924 International Lawn Tennis Challenge was the 19th edition of what is now known as the Davis Cup. The tournament was, for the second straight year, divided into the America and Europe Zones. 17 teams competed in the Europe Zone, and 6 in America. China, Cuba, Hungary, Mexico, and New Zealand all competed for the first time, and South Africa and Austria returned to create the largest field to date. For the second straight year, Australia defeated France in the Inter-Zonal play-off, but once again fell to the United States in the challenge round.
