Cuatrecasas Medal For Excellence In Tropical Botany
Jose Cuatrecasas Medal for Excellence in Tropical Botany was initiated in 2001 by the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, USA. It is named after José Cuatrecasas, a pioneering botanist and taxonomist who worked on the flora of tropical South America. It is awarded annually to a scientist who has made a very significant contribution to advancing the field of tropical botany. Nominations for the award can be made by all in the Botany Department at the museum. The award is a bronze medal with an image of José Cuatrecasas on one side and the awardee's name and date of presentation on the other. The awardees are: 2001: Rogers McVaugh a taxonomist of tropical and temperate species particularly Lobeliaceae and Myrtaceae, author of tropical floras for Panama, Guatemala, the Guyana Highlands and Mexico, and biographies of several botanists. 2002: P. Krameriaceae
''Krameria'' is the only genus in the Krameriaceae family, of which any of the approximately 18 species are commonly known as rhatany, ratany or rattany. Rhatany is also the name given to krameria root, a botanical remedy consisting of the dried root of para rhatany ('' Krameria argentea'') or Peruvian rhatany ('' Krameria lappacea''). The biological action of rhatany is caused by the astringent rhataniatannic acid, which is similar to tannic acid. Infusions have been used as a gargle, a lozenge, especially when mixed with cocaine, as a local hemostatic and remedy for diarrhea. Pteridophytes
A pteridophyte is a vascular plant (with xylem and phloem) that disperses spores. Because pteridophytes produce neither flowers nor seeds, they are sometimes referred to as "cryptogams", meaning that their means of reproduction is hidden. Ferns, horsetails (often treated as ferns), and lycophytes (clubmosses, spikemosses, and quillworts) are all pteridophytes. Eriocaulaceae
The Eriocaulaceae are a family of monocotyledonous flowering plants in the order Poales, commonly known as the pipewort family. The family is large, with about 1207 known species described in seven genera. They are widely distributed, with the centers of diversity for the group occurring in tropical regions, particularly the Americas. Very few species extend to temperate regions, with only 16 species in the United States, mostly in the southern states from California to Florida, only two species in Canada, and only one species (''Eriocaulon aquaticum'') in Europe. Ana Maria Giulietti
Ana Maria Giulietti Harley (born 1945) is a Brazilian biochemist, botanist, and educator known for researching ''Eriocaulaceae'', as well as her work at the University of São Paulo, State University of Feira de Santana, and Vale Institute of Technology. She has described over 70 species and gathered over 300 specimens. She was the 2013 recipient of the José Cuatrecasas Medal for Excellence in Tropical Botany. Early life and education Born in Pesqueira, Brazil, Giulietti went on to receive her Bachelor's at Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco, Recife in 1967. She then studied for a Master's at the Universidade de São Paulo, which she received in 1970. Walter S. Judd (born 1951) is an American botanist and taxonomist, and distinguished professor in the Department of Botany, University of Florida since 2009. Career Judd attended Michigan State University (B.S. 1973, M.S. 1974) and Harvard University (Ph.D. 1978). He became an assistant professor in the Department of Botany at the University of Florida (1978–1983), associate professor (1983–1991) and professor in 1991.
