Croxton Railway Station
Croxton railway station is a commuter railway station on the Mernda line, serving the north-eastern Melbourne suburb of Northcote, Victoria, Australia. Croxton is a unstaffed status ground structure station featuring two side platforms. It opened on 1 October 1889. The station has connections to Melbourne tram routes 11 and 86 on St George’s Road and High Street. History Opening on 8 October 1889, when the Inner Circle line was extended from North Fitzroy to Reservoir, Croxton station was named after the nearby Croxton Park Racecourse and Hotel, which in turn was named after Croxton Racecourse in Leicestershire, England. In 1922, the station was closed to goods traffic. On 3 July 1972, the former station building on Platform 1 was damaged by fire, with the waiting room and toilets destroyed. Mernda Railway Line
The Mernda railway line (previously the South Morang line, Epping line and Whittlesea line) is a commuter rail passenger train service in Melbourne, Australia. It operates between Flinders Street in the Melbourne central business district and Mernda through the northern suburbs including East Melbourne, Richmond, Abbotsford, Clifton Hill, Fitzroy North, Northcote, Preston, Reservoir, Thomastown, Lalor, Epping, South Morang and Mernda. The service is part of the Public Transport Victoria metropolitan rail network. The Australian Railway Historical Society (ARHS) aims to foster an interest in the railways, and record and preserve many facets of railway operations. It had divisions in every state and the Australian Capital Territory, although the ACT division was wound up in 2016, along with the Victorian division in 2020. Since 1967, when each division incorporated, the state divisions have operated as separate entities. Croxton Park, Victoria
Croxton Park was a multi-purpose sports venue located in present-day Northcote and Thornbury, Victoria. It comprised a horse racing track which was in use from 1865 until 1873, and a grassed oval used for Australian rules football and other sports until the 1910s. Unlike most major sports venues in Melbourne, which were council owned, Croxton Park was privately owned by the proprietors of the adjoining Croxton Park Hotel, which proved controversial for its proximity to alcohol service and for behaviour of patrons.
