The Women's 4 × 5 kilometre relay cross-country skiing competition at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy was held on 18 February, at Pragelato. Vibeke Skofterud, Hilde Gjermundshaug Pedersen, Kristin Størmer Steira and Marit Bjørgen of Norway were the defending World Champions, but finished third at a pre-Olympic World Cup event in Val di Fiemme, where a team representing Finland won. Natalya Ivanova Baranova-Masalkina (russian: Наталья Ивановна Баранова-Масалкина); born February 25, 1975 in Krivosheino, Tomsk Oblast) is a former Russian cross-country skier who has competed from 1994 to 2006. She won a gold medal in the 4 × 5 km relay at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Competitive cross-country skiing encompasses a variety of race formats and course lengths. Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle (; born 27 November 1980) is a retired German cross-country skier and biathlete from Reit im Winkl who has competed since 1998. She was born in Traunstein, West Germany. Marit Bjørgen (born 21 March 1980) is a former Norwegian cross-country skier. She is ranked first in the all-time Cross-Country World Cup rankings with 114 individual victories. Bjørgen is also the most successful sprinter in Cross-Country World Cup history, with 29 victories. She headed the medal table at the 2010 Winter Olympics by winning five medals, including three gold. She competed from 2002 to 2015, and won six individual FIS Cross-Country World Cup, World Cup victories and five individual medals at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships and Winter Olympic Games.
