Cosmin Hănceanu
Cosmin Hănceanu (born on 26 July 1986) is a Romanian sabre fencer, team world champion in 2009. He won the bronze medal in the 2010 World Fencing Championships. Career Hănceanu began fencing at age ten at his local club, CSM Iași, with Iulian Bițucă as coach. He later transferred to CSA Steaua in Bucharest. Hănceanu joined Florin Zalomir, Tiberiu Dolniceanu and Rareș Dumitrescu in the national team. In the 2008–09 season, Romania won a silver medal in the European Championships at Plovdiv. In the World Championships in Antalya, Romania defeated Germany, then France and Hungary. In the final they met Italy again and this time prevailed 45–44 to take the first World title in sabre for Romania. For this performance, Hănceanu and his team-mates received the Order of Sports Merit, class IIa. In the 2010 World Fencing Championships, Hănceanu started the competition 53rd in world rankings. Florin Zalomir (; 21 April 1981 – 3 October 2022) was a Romanian sabre fencer who competed in the 2012 Summer Olympics winning a silver medal in the sabre team event. The European Fencing Confederation (EFC; french: Confédération européenne d'escrime, CEE) is an international body created in 1991, charged with the promotion and development of fencing in Europe. It organises the European Fencing Championships annually at several levels: cadets (U17), junior (U20), under 23, seniors and veterans (more than 40 years old). The Confederation comprises all national European fencing federations, plus that of Israel, and is under the authority of FIE. In reaction to the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the EFC agreed with the FIE to ban Russian and Belarusian fencers, and reallocated competitions that were due to be held in Russia and Belarus. Rareș Dumitrescu
Rareș Dumitrescu (; born 24 December 1983 in Brașov) is a Romanian sabre fencer, World silver medal in 2009. With the Romanian team he was European champion in 2006, World champion in 2009 and Olympic team silver medal in 2012. Personal life Dumitrescu discovered fencing at age ten by circumstance: his mother, a teacher, had a pupil whose father was a fencing coach. He began training at his local club CS Tractorul under Cătălin Albu, who also served as sparring partner in the absence of other sabre fencers in Brașov: the Olympic center was in Iași. He was also frustrated by a lack of money: his parents had to pay for his travel expenses and entrance fees when he began competition. He did not have dedicated fencing shoes either and wore out dozens of ordinary trainers on the piste.
