Clonakilty GAA
Clonakilty GAA is a Gaelic football and hurling club based in the town and parish of Clonakilty in County Cork, Ireland. It is affiliated to the Carbery division of Cork. It was founded in October 1887. The club is most famous for being from the same town where black pudding is produced. The club currently plays in the Cork Senior Football Championship and has won the title on 9 occasions. Winning in 1939, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1946, 1947, 1952, 1996 and 2009. Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. Tom Clancy (Gaelic Footballer)
Thomas Clancy (born 13 February 1992) is an Irish Gaelic footballer who plays as a centre-back for the Cork senior team. Born in Clonakilty, County Cork, Clancy first played competitive Gaelic football during his schooling at Clonakilty Community College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of eighteen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 2013 championship. Since then Clancy has become a regular member of the starting fifteen. At club level Clancy has won several championship medals with Clonakilty. Maurice Shanley
Maurice Shanley (born 14 September 1999) is an Irish Gaelic footballer who plays for Premier Senior Championship club Clonakilty and at inter-county level with the Cork senior football team. He usually lines out as a full-back. Playing career Cork Shanley first lined out for Cork when he was drafted onto the Cork under-20 team for the 2018 Munster Under-20 Championship. He made his first appearance for the team on 16 June 2018 when he played at midfield in the 1–20 to 0–08 defeat of Tipperary. He was switched to right wing-forward for the subsequent 3–11 to 0–14 defeat by Kerry in the Munster final. Liam O'Donovan (born 1998) is an Irish Gaelic footballer who plays for Cork Senior Championship club Clonakilty and at inter-county level with the Cork senior football team. Seán White (born 14 March 1995) is an Irish Gaelic footballer who plays at club level with Clonakilty. He is a former member of the Cork senior football team. Career White first came to prominence as a dual player with the Clonakilty club, while simultaneously lining out with Clonakilty Community College in the Corn Uí Mhuirí. At club level he has won several divisional titles at all grades of hurling and Gaelic football, while he also lined out in the 2021 Cork PSFC final defeat by St. Finbarr's. David Lowney (born 8 October 1997) is an Irish hurler who plays as a right corner-back for club side Clonakilty, divisional side Carbery, university side University College Cork and at inter-county level with the Cork senior hurling team. Playing career University College Cork On 23 February 2019, Lowney was a substitute for University College Cork when they faced Mary Immaculate College in the Fitzgibbon Cup final. Fachtna O'Donovan
Michael Fachtna O'Donovan (1921 - 17 October 1995) was an Irish sportsperson. He played Gaelic football with his local club Clonakilty and was a member of the Cork senior inter-county team from 1943 until 1949. Career O'Donovan first came to Gaelic football prominence with the Carbery Rangers team that won consecutive Southwest Junior Championship titles. Around this time he was also drafted onto the Cork minor team and won a Munster Minor Championship title in 1939. O'Donovan subsequently transferred to the Clonakilty club that was enjoying a golden age in terms of success and won six County Championship titles in ten years. The Kerry County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), or Kerry GAA, is one of the 32 county boards of the GAA in Ireland. Pat Griffin
Patrick Griffin (1944 – 29 October 2019) was an Irish sportsperson. He played Gaelic football with his local club Glenbeigh-Glencar and Clonakilty in County Cork and was a member of the Kerry senior inter-county team from 1963 until 1974. Playing career Kerry Senior Griffin was added to the Kerry senior team in advance of the 1963 Munster Championship. He made his first appearance for the team on 14 July 1963 when he came on as a substitute for Vincent Lucey at right corner-forward in the Munster final. Pádraigh Griffin
Pádraigh Griffin (1975 – 22 October 2022) was an Irish Gaelic footballer. At club level he played with Clonakilty and was also a member of the Cork senior football team. Playing career Griffin first played Gaelic football at juvenile and underage levels with Clonakilty. He also lined out as a schoolboy with Clonakilty Community College and won an All-Ireland VSFC title with the Cork vocational schools' team in 1994. Griffin first played for Clonakilty at adult level as a member of the junior team. He was a member of the club's senior team that won the Cork SFC title in 1996, before claiming a second winners' medal in 2009.
