Chateau Crillon Apartment House
The Chateau Crillon Apartment House, also known as the Cohen Apartment House and the Rittenhouse 222 Apartments, is a historic high-rise building in the fashionable Rittenhouse Square section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. The 27-story building was designed by architect Horace Trumbauer in the Lombardic Romanesque style and completed in 1928. The style was perhaps suggested by the newly built Shelton Hotel in New York City, designed by A. L. Harmon.Located at 525 Lexington Avenue. There are setbacks on the 17th and 24th floors. The developer was Louis H. Cahan, who also built the Locust Street Theater building at Broad & Locust Sts., The Mitten Building (now The Philadelphia Building) at Juniper and Walnut Sts., and The Mayfair House in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. Horace Trumbauer
Horace Trumbauer (December 28, 1868 – September 18, 1938) was a prominent American architect of the Gilded Age, known for designing residential manors for the wealthy. Later in his career he also designed hotels, office buildings, and much of the campus of Duke University. Trumbauer's massive palaces flattered the egos of his " robber baron" clients, but were dismissed by his professional peers. His work made him a wealthy man, but his buildings rarely received positive critical recognition. Today, however, he is hailed as one of America's premier architects, with his buildings drawing critical acclaim even to this day. Rittenhouse Square is a neighborhood, including a public park, in Center City Philadelphia. The park is one of the five original open-space parks planned by William Penn and his surveyor Thomas Holme during the late 17th century. The neighborhood is among the highest-income urban neighborhoods in the country. Together with Fitler Square, the Rittenhouse neighborhood and the square comprise the Rittenhouse–Fitler Historic District. The New York Marriott East Side (formerly the Shelton Hotel, Shelton Towers Hotel, and Halloran House) is a former hotel at 525 Lexington Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The 34-story, building was designed by Arthur Loomis Harmon in a classical style and was developed by James T. Lee, grandfather of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. It was constructed between 1922 and 1923 as the Shelton Hotel, an apartment hotel. The Marriott East Side, one of several large hotels developed around Grand Central Terminal as part of Terminal City, is a New York City designated landmark. The hotel building contains setbacks to comply with the 1916 Zoning Resolution; at the time of its construction, the Shelton was quoted as the world's tallest hotel.
