Sinhala Language
Sinhala ( ; , ''siṁhala'', ), sometimes called Sinhalese (), is an Indo-Aryan languages, Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken by the Sinhalese people of Sri Lanka, who make up the largest ethnic group on the island, numbering about 16 million. Sinhala is also spoken as the first language by other ethnic groups in Sri Lanka, totalling about 2 million people as of 2001. It is written using the Sinhala script, which is a Brahmic scripts, Brahmic script closely related to the Grantha script of South India. Sinhala is one of the official and national languages of Sri Lanka. Along with Pali, it played a major role in the development of Theravada, Theravada Buddhist literature. Nira Wickramasinghe
Nira Konjit Wickramasinghe is professor of modern South Asian studies at Leiden University in the Netherlands and a well known international academic. She was a professor in the department of history and international relations, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, until 2009. She grew up in Paris and studied at the University of Paris IV - Sorbonne from 1981 to 1984 and at the University of Oxford from 1985 to 1989, where she earned her doctorate in modern history. She joined the University of Colombo in 1990 and taught there until 2009. She has been a World Bank Robert McNamara fellow, a Fulbright senior scholar at New York University, a visiting professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, and more recently British Academy Fellow at St Antony's College, Oxford. Wickremasinghe Wimaladasa
Deshabandu Wickramesinghe Wimaladasa (born 29 August 1943) is a Sri Lankan former sprinter who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympics. He won two gold medals at the 1974 Asian Games held in Tehran, Iran, in the men's 400m and relay events. Wimaladasa received his education at Nugawela Salvation Army Primary School and Alawwa Central, where he took part in athletics at school and district level. He enlisted in the Ceylon Army in 1963 and was attached to the 1st Battalion, Gemunu Watch. In 1964, he became the champion of 100 metres and 200 metres in the inter-regiment athletic meet and in 1965 set a 100 meters new national record. Following his gold medal in Tehran, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and later commissioned an officer. He retired from the Sri Lanka Army in 1998 as a colonel. Wickremasinghe Rajaguru
Wickremasinghe B. Rajaguru (born 31 August 1938) was the 25th Inspector General of the Sri Lanka Police (IGP) (1995–1998). Rajaguru attended St. Anthony's College, Kandy. In 1993 he was forcibly retired at the age of 55 but following the election of the People's Alliance government at the 1994 parliamentary elections they granted the option for senior police officers who had faced potential political victimisation to appeal and request to be re-instated with back-wages. Rajaguru was one of the six officers reinstated and placed in the rank of Senior DIG. He was appointed as IGP on 29 July 1995. Wickrama Arachchige Udaya Wickramasinghe (12 August 1939 – 12 April 2010) was a Sri Lankan cricket umpire. Wickramasinghe was born in Matugama in Sri Lanka. He was educated at St Peter's College and Dharmapala College, and worked as an Immigration Officer in the Immigration Department in Sri Lanka. His cricket umpiring career began in 1969 in Sri Lankan domestic cricket. He served as an umpire in international cricket from 1987 to 1998. Shelley Wickramasinghe (1926–10 August 2011) was a Sri Lankan cricketer. He studied at the Kalutara Vidyalaya. From 1972 to 2000, he represented Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club and served as its president three times. Wickramasinghe also contributed to cricket administration serving as president of the Mercantile Cricket Association and chairman of the National Sports Council.
