The Nice Lawn Tennis Club is a tennis complex in Nice, France. It is the home venue of the ATP World Tour's Nice Open as of 2010. History The complex opened in 1890. It is located at 5 Avenue Suzanne Lenglen. The club is home to 18 clay courts, including a center court stadium. From 1895 to 1970 the club hosted the South of France Championships for men and ended in 1971 for women. The successor tournament was known as the Nice International Championships. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) is the principal organizing body of women's professional tennis. It governs the WTA Tour which is the worldwide professional tennis tour for women and was founded to create a better future for women's tennis. The WTA's corporate headquarters is in St. Petersburg, Florida, with its European headquarters in London and its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Beijing. Clay Court
A clay court is one of the types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Clay courts are made of crushed stone, brick, shale, or other unbound mineral aggregate depending on the tournament. The French Open uses clay courts, the only Grand Slam tournament to do so. Clay courts are more common in Continental Europe and Latin America than in North America, Asia-Pacific or Britain. Two main types exist: red clay, the more common variety, and green clay, also known as "rubico", which is a harder surface. Although less expensive to construct than other types of tennis courts, the maintenance costs of clay are high as the surface must be rolled to preserve flatness. Anna-Maria "Sandra" Cecchini (; born 27 February 1965) is a retired professional tennis player from Italy. Career Cecchini turned professional in 1984. She won 12 singles and 11 doubles titles on the WTA Tour. She had career wins over Chris Evert, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Gabriela Sabatini, Nathalie Tauziat, Natasha Zvereva, and Anke Huber. Nathalie Tauziat (born 17 October 1967) is a French former professional tennis player. She was the runner-up in women's singles at the 1998 Wimbledon Championships and runner-up in the women's doubles at the 2001 US Open partnering Kimberly Po-Messerli. Catherine ("Cathy") Tanvier (born 28 May 1965) is a former tennis player from France. She peaked at number 20 in 1984, and won one singles and nine doubles titles on the WTA Tour. Career In 1982, Tanvier became Wimbledon girls' singles champion after defeating first-seeded Helena Suková in the final in straight sets. Tanvier won one singles title on the WTA Tour, at the 1983 Freiburg Open clay court tournament, defeating Laura Arraya in the final in straight sets. Isabelle Demongeot (born 18 September 1966) is a former professional tennis player from France, who turned professional on 1 May 1983. She lived in Saint-Tropez in the French Riviera in the early stages of her career and later settled further south in Gassin. Demongeot won her only WTA Tour singles title in Purchase in New York state in 1991. She achieved her best Grand Slam singles performance by reaching the fourth round of Wimbledon in 1986.
