Princes Of Civitella-Cesi
Prince of Civitella-Cesi is an Italian title of nobility granted to Giovanni Torlonia (1755–1829) of the Torlonia family. In exchange for the administration of finances of the Holy See with the blessing of the Pope, Giovanni Torlonia was created in 1794 Duke of Bracciano and Count of Pisciarelli; in 1803 Marquis of Romavecchia and Turrita; and 1st Prince of Civitella Cesi ( Princeps Romanus); in 1809 he was created a Roman Patrician (with Papal confirmation of that honor on January 19, 1813) and in 1820 became Duke of Poli and Guadagnolo, with other titles. He was the builder of the Villa Torlonia in Rome. The House of Torlonia is the name of an Italian princely family from Rome, which acquired a huge fortune in the 18th and 19th centuries through administering the finances of the Vatican. The first influential member of the Torlonia family was Marino Torlonia (Tourlonias; 1725 – 21 March 1785), who rose from humble origins in the Auvergne region of France to become a very rich businessman and banker in Rome. Marino was born with the French name of Marin Torlonias, the son of Antoine Torlonias, a merchant and laborer. Marin's great-uncle was the parish priest of Augerolles, who procured for him a position as aide to an influential abbot. Marin eventually settled in Rome, where he became a cloth merchant and money lender near the Piazza of the Trinità dei Monti. '' Don'' Marco Alfonso Torlonia, 6th Prince of Civitella-Cesi (2 July 1937 – 5 December 2014) was the son of Alessandro Torlonia, 5th Prince of Civitella-Cesi and Infanta Beatriz of Spain, daughter of King Alfonso XIII of Spain. He was, therefore, the first cousin to King Juan Carlos I of Spain. He was also an uncle to Princess Sibilla of Luxembourg, daughter of his younger sister, Olimpia. Don Alessandro Torlonia, 5th Prince of Civitella-Cesi (7 December 1911 – 1 May/12 May 1986) was an Italian banking heir and a member of the House of Torlonia. About Born in Rome on 7 December 1911, Torlonia was the son of Marino Torlonia, 4th Prince di Civitella-Cesi and his American wife, Mary Elsie Moore. Don Alessandro's youngest sister was ''Donna'' Marina Torlonia di Civitella-Cesi, grandmother of the American actress Brooke Shields. Thus he was Shields's grand-uncle. On the death of his father in 1933, he inherited large estates as well as his father's princely and other titles. In 1941, when his mother was dying in New York City, Torlonia took a high speed boat from Portugal and was arrested in error by FBI, thinking he was an enemy of the state and taken to Ellis Island. Augusto inherited the title from his grandfather's younger brother, Alessandro Torlonia, 2nd Prince of Civitella-Cesi. Villa Torlonia is a villa and surrounding gardens in Rome, Italy, formerly belonging to the Torlonia family. It is entered from the via Nomentana. Design It was designed by the Neoclassical architect Giuseppe Valadier. Construction began in 1806 for the banker Giovanni Torlonia (1756–1829) and was finished by his son Alessandro (1800–1880). History Mussolini rented it from the Torlonia for one lira a year to use as his state residence from the 1920s onwards. He and his family lived there for the next 18 years. It was abandoned after 1945, and allowed to decay in the following decades, but recent restoration work has allowed it to be opened to the public as a museum owned and operated by Rome's municipality.
