Créteil - Université (Paris Métro)
Créteil () is a commune in the southeastern suburbs of Paris, Île-de-France. It is located from the centre of Paris. Créteil is the '' préfecture'' (capital) of the Val-de-Marne department as well as the seat of the Arrondissement of Créteil. The city is, moreover, the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese and of one of France's 30 nationwide ''académies'' (districts) of the Ministry of National Education. Name The name Créteil was recorded for the first time as ''Cristoilum'' in the martyrology written by a monk named Usuard in 865. The name ''Cristoilum'' is made of the Celtic word ''ialo'' (meaning "clearing, glade", "place of") suffixed to a pre-Latin radical ''crist-'' whose meaning is still unclear. Some believe ''crist'' is a Celtic word meaning "ridge", a cognate of Latin ''crista'' and modern French ''crête'', in which case the meaning of ''Cristoilum'' would be "clearing on the ridge" or "place on the ridge." A more traditional etymology was that ''cr ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

His name appears in a list of monks of Saint-Germain-des-Prés written around 841/847 (a declaration of spiritual association with the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Remi). The martyrology of Usuard enjoyed consistent success throughout the Middle Ages, as evidenced by numerous surviving manuscripts.Henri Quentin gives a partial list: cf. Marne (river)
The Marne () is a river in France, an eastern tributary of the Seine in the area east and southeast of Paris. It is long. The river gave its name to the departments of Haute-Marne, Marne, Seine-et-Marne, and Val-de-Marne. The Marne starts in the Langres plateau, runs generally north then bends west between Saint-Dizier and Châlons-en-Champagne, joining the Seine at Charenton just upstream from Paris. Its main tributaries are the Rognon, the Blaise, the Saulx, the Ourcq, the Petit Morin and the Grand Morin. Near the town of Saint-Dizier, part of the flow is diverted through the artificial Lake Der-Chantecoq. This ensures both flood prevention and the maintenance of minimum river flows in periods of drought. The Marne is famous as the site of two eponymous battles during World War I. The first battle was a turning point of the war, fought in 1914. The second battle was fought four years later, in 1918. History The Celts of Gaul worshipped a goddess known as Dea Matrona ... Agoard And Aglibert
Agoard and Aglibert were martyrs at Créteil, Paris, France, around 400 AD. Other sources say their martyrdom was in the 7th or 8th century. Saint Agoard and Saint Aglibert are celebrated locally on 24 June. Relics The relics of Saint Agoard and Saint Aglibert are kept in an old metal reliquary in the crypt of the Saint-Christophe Church, Créteil. Henry Lerolle painted a fresco in this church in 1874, that represents the martyrs. At the beginning of the 20th century, a cross still marked the place that tradition held to be the place of martyrdom. Usuard's account The hagiographic legend of "Saint Agoard" is found in the martyrology of the Benedictine monk Usuard from around 865. This text is questioned today by historians who qualify it as an "incoherent assemblage". It states that Agoard resided in Créteil near Paris. He was massacred around the year 400 with his family and friends, including Saint Aglibert. Ramsgate account The monks of St Augustine's Abbey, Rams ...
