Crotty V
Crotty (and variations O’Crotty, Crotti, Crottee, etc.) are anglicisations of the Irish name Ó Crotaigh – ‘Descendant of Crotach’. The name dates from medieval times, to the pre-Norman kingdom of Thomond ('North Munster') where the Dál gCais (in English: ‘Dalcassian’) clan, centred on the regional rulers - the Uí Briain ( O'Brien) family - were dominant. The Crottys were one of eight septs of the O’Briens (i.e. descended via the female line - hence the different surnames). They settled in Western Co.Waterford and Eastern Co.Cork. In common with the O’Briens - and the millions of descendants of the other seven septs - the Crotty sept's likely ultimate common ancestor is Brian Bóruma mac Cennétig (‘Brian Boru’) c.941 – 1014, and therefore possibly (via the Dál gCais) as far back as Cormac Cas in the 3rd Century. Elizabeth Crotty
Elizabeth Crotty, better known as Mrs. Crotty (née Markham; 6 December 1885 – 27 December 1960), was an Irish concertina player. Crotty began gaining traction in the 1950s in the wake of the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. She participated in this movement of musicians from an early stage. When a local branch was founded in County Clare, Crotty was elected president. She kept this position until her death in 1960. Crotty did not make any commercial recordings. The RTÉ had made a few recordings for their programs and they used one for their commemoration LP of 50 years RTÉ in 1976. Crotty was the namesake of the ''"Eigse Mrs Crotty" Traditional Music School and Festival'', a yearly music festival in July in Kilrush. This festival was held from 1996 to 2009. Patrick Crotty
Patrick James Crotty (23 November 1902 – 26 November 1970) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Carlow–Kilkenny constituency from 1948 to 1969. He was elected to Dáil Éireann at the 1948 general election, and re-elected five times, at the 1951, 1954, 1957, 1961 and 1965 general elections. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Industry and Commerce from 1954 to 1957. Michael Francis Crotty (born 26 March 1970) is an Irish prelate of the Catholic Church who was appointed a titular archbishop and Apostolic Nuncio to Burkina Faso in 2020. Biography Michael Francis Crotty was born in Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, on 26 March 1970. Kieran Crotty
Kieran Crotty (20 August 1930 – 22 July 2022) was an Irish Fine Gael politician who served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Carlow–Kilkenny constituency from 1969 to 1989. Crotty was first elected to the Dáil following the 1969 general election as a Fine Gael TD for Carlow–Kilkenny. His father Patrick Crotty was a TD for Carlow–Kilkenny from 1948 to 1969. He was re-elected six times, at the 1973, 1977, 1981, February 1982, November 1982 and 1987 general elections. He did not contest the 1989 general election. He was elected as Mayor of Kilkenny for six one-year-terms between 1970 and 1995. He died on 22 July 2022, at the age of 91. John Kevin Crotty (born July 15, 1969) is an American former professional basketball player. A 6'1" point guard from the University of Virginia, Crotty was undrafted, but played in 11 National Basketball Association (NBA) seasons from 1992 to 2003. After retiring from the NBA, Crotty moved into sports broadcasting with the Miami Heat.
