Creophilus Oculatus
''Creophilus oculatus'' or devil's coach horse is a species of large carrion-feeding rove beetle endemic to New Zealand. Taxonomy ''Creophilus oculatus'' was described and named by Danish zoologist Johan Christian Fabricius, Johann Christian Fabricius as ''Staphylinus oculatus''. The lectotype and two paralectotype specimens were designated by David J. Clarke in 2011 and are housed at Natural History Museum, London, The Natural History Museum, London, UK (BMNH). These were some of the first insect specimens collected in New Zealand by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander in 1769–1770 on James Cook, Cook's First voyage of James Cook, first voyage to New Zealand. The specimens of ''C. oculatus'' were likely collected from dried or decaying animal materials which also contained these carrion beetles. Johan Christian Fabricius (7 January 1745 – 3 March 1808) was a Danish zoologist, specialising in "Insecta", which at that time included all arthropods: insects, arachnids, crustaceans and others. He was a student of Carl Linnaeus, and is considered one of the most important entomologists of the 18th century, having named nearly 10,000 species of animals, and established the basis for the modern insect classification. The rove beetles are a family (Staphylinidae) of beetles, primarily distinguished by their short elytra (wing covers) that typically leave more than half of their abdominal segments exposed. With roughly 63,000 species in thousands of genera, the group is currently recognized as the largest extant family of organisms. It is an ancient group, with fossilized rove beetles known from the Triassic, 200 million years ago, and possibly even earlier if the genus ''Leehermania'' proves to be a member of this family. Staphylininae are a subfamily of rove beetles (family Staphylinidae). They contain the typical rove beetles with their long but fairly robust blunt-headed and -tipped bodies and short elytra, as well as some more unusually-shaped lineages. Systematics As it seems, the Staphylininae are part of a large clade together with the subfamilies Euaesthetinae, Leptotyphlinae, Megalopsidiinae, Oxyporinae, Paederinae, Pseudopsinae, Scydmaeninae, Solieriinae, Steninae, and the extinct Protactinae which are only known from fossils. A pitfall trap is a trapping pit for small animals, such as insects, amphibians and reptiles. Pitfall traps are a sampling technique, mainly used for ecology studies and ecologic pest control. Animals that enter a pitfall trap are unable to escape.
