Lorida is an unincorporated community in eastern Highlands County, Florida, United States. It lies along U.S. Route 98 between the cities of Sebring and Okeechobee. In addition to some light industry located along U.S. 98 corridor, Lorida and the surrounding area contains numerous fish camps and lodges on the north and east shore of Lake Istokpoga. History Lorida was first named Istokpoga, a Seminole name, but it was afterwards changed because the U.S. postal authorities refused to accept that name, there being another post office in the state with a similar name. It was then named after an abbreviated form of Florida. Lorida, Florida has been noted for its unusual place name. A post office was established under the name Istokpoga in 1924, and the name was changed to Lorida in 1937. Lake June In Winter
Lake June in Winter, on the west side of Lake Placid, Florida, has a surface area of . This lake is also written "Lake June-in-Winter" and was once known as Lake Stearns. The lake is kidney-shaped, with coves on the northeast and northwest. Lake June is bordered on the south, some of the east and much of the north by residences and residential areas. The entire western shore is bordered by Lake June in Winter Scrub State Park. Other areas are bordered by vacant areas of scrub and grassland. Two nearby lakes, Lake Henry (Florida) and Lake Lachard are near the lake's shores. Lake June has public access along much of its shoreline. Lake June-in-Winter Scrub State Park occupies the entire west side of the lake. This park has trails and a picnic area with tables and a shelter. Florida State Road 64
State Road 64 (SR 64) extends from City Road 789 (former County Road 789) near the Gulf of Mexico in Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island in Manatee County to US 27/US 98 in Avon Park in Highlands County. State Road 64 travels from west to east through the counties of Manatee, Hardee and Highlands. It is a mostly rural two-lane highway going through only two cities, Bradenton and Zolfo Springs. It crosses the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway as well as the Braden River, Lake Manatee, and the Myakka River. East of Avon Park, a bi-county extension runs northeast into Polk County which runs through Lake Wales Ridge State Forest and terminates at the Avon Park US Air Force Base.
