Coorparoo Australian Football Club
Coorparoo Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in the Brisbane suburb of Coorparoo from 1935 until the senior club folded in 1995. The club left the QAFL following the 1993 season due to the financial strain experienced since the recent introduction of a minimum salary cap, and joined the Brisbane Australian Football League (BAFL) for the 1994 and 1995 seasons. The "Coorparoo Junior Australian Football Club" has continued as a stand-alone club since 1996 to the present. The "Coorparoo (Seniors) Kings Football Club" also operates out of the same oval in Birubi Street. Both teams club colours are navy blue with a white monogram. History Formed in 1935, Coorparoo played in the QAFL from 1941 to 1993. They were nicknamed the ''Roos''. For the 1953 and 1954 seasons they merged with Yeronga. Queensland Australian Football League
The Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) is an Australian rules football competition organised by the AFL Queensland, contested by clubs from South East Queensland. Previously known as the Queensland Football League (QFL), Queensland Australian National Football League (QANFL), Queensland Australian Football League (QAFL) and AFL Queensland State League (AFLQSL), the QAFL is the premier semi-professional competition in Queensland. Since its inception, more than fifty teams have played in the premiership competition. John Pitura
John Pitura (born 21 September 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the South Melbourne and Richmond Football Clubs in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1970s. Pitura was born in Wagga Wagga to a Polish father and as a child played rugby league. He was just 16 when he was recruited to South Melbourne by coach Norm Smith and he eventually made his league debut in 1969, ironically against Richmond. A left footed half forward flanker and centreman, Pitura represented Victoria at interstate football in 1973. At the conclusion of the 1973 season, due to a strained relationship with the board, Pitura came close to leaving the club but remained on their books for the following year. He didn't play again until late July in 1974, after season long negotiations with South Melbourne. Coorparoo Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in the Brisbane suburb of Coorparoo. The institution was established in 1996, one year after the original Coorparoo club folded. The club currently plays in the QFA Division 1, managed by the AFL Queensland. Apart from the Senior team, Coorparoo has also women's and youth football divisions. Ken Grimley
Ken Grimley (born 7 February 1936) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy Football Club, Fitzroy in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL). Grimley was a rugby league full-back while growing up in Brisbane and only took up Australian football after leaving school. He started out in the Wilston Grange Football Club, Wilston Grange junior team but soon broke into the seniors and in 1955 played in the club's first ever Queensland Australian Football League, QANFL premiership. The following year he was the league's top goal-kicker with over 100 goals. He spent just one season at Fitzroy, having been invited to the club by officials he met during an exhibition game in Brisbane. In just his second appearance, but first full game, Grimley kicked six goals from full-forward against Geelong at Kardinia Park. Tom Calder
Thomas Charles Calder (17 December 1917 – 23 June 1997) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). He is a member of the Queensland Football Hall of Fame. Although born in Victoria, Calder played his early football in Tasmania and started his senior career at North Hobart in 1935. While with North Hobart, Calder suffered a serious on-field injury and had a kidney removed. A centre-half back, he made his way to Queensland Australian National Football League club Ascot in 1940 and joined the Royal Australian Air Force in the same year, serving as a pilot during the war. Calder was posted at Melbourne in 1945 and was joined VFL club South Melbourne, with whom he would make five successive appearances from round 14. Although the club went on to make the grand final, Calder wasn't selected in any finals fixtures. William Ronald Ryan (born 26 November 1944) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Football Ryan, who was recruited from Swan Hill, could play as a ruckman, centre half back and key position forward. On 6 July 1963 he was a member of the Geelong team that were comprehensively and unexpectedly beaten by Fitzroy, 9.13 (67) to 3.13 (31) in the 1963 Miracle Match. He participated in the 1967 Grand Final but his side lost and he never played in another. A strong mark off the ball, he finished equal fifth in the 1971 Brownlow Medal count. The same year he kicked a career best 67 goals, with eight of them coming against Footscray at Kardinia Park. He is often remembered for a match-winning goal he kicked after the siren against Collingwood at his home ground in the 1967 season. Coorparoo is a suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Coorparoo had a population of 16,282 people. Geography Coorparoo is by road south-east of the Brisbane GPO. It borders Camp Hill, Holland Park, Stones Corner, Greenslopes, East Brisbane and Norman Park. Toponymy Coorparoo was chosen as the name of the suburb at a public meeting on 22 March 1875, before which it was known as Four Mile Camp. The name Coorparoo is likely derived from an Aboriginal name for Norman Creek, probably recorded by early surveyors as ''Koolpuroom''. The word is thought to refer to either a place associated with mosquitoes, or a sound made by the 'gentle dove'. The latter explanation appears doubtful though, as 'gentle dove' may mean the spotted dove, which was introduced to the area in 1912, long after the name Coorparoo was adopted.
