Stephen Wearne (born 4 October 1968) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne in the Australian Football League (AFL) in 1992. Originally from Queensland, he was recruited from the Sandringham Football Club in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) with the 22nd selection in the 1991 Mid-year Draft. The Sandringham Football Club, nicknamed The Zebras, is an Australian rules football club based in Melbourne which was formed in 1929 and plays in the Victorian Football League (VFL) which was formerly called the Victorian Football Association (VFA). History The Sandringham Football Club was admitted to the VFA competition (now VFL) for the 1929 season, though the first moves to establish a semi-professional football team from the Sandringham region began two years earlier. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). 1990 AFL Draft
The 1990 AFL draft was the 5th annual draft of Australian rules footballers to the 14 clubs in the Australian Football League. It consisted of the national draft held at the end of the 1990 season, the pre-season draft held before the 1991 AFL season, and a mid-season draft. Clubs receive picks based on the reverse of the position in which they finish on the ladder during the season. This was introduced as an equalisation strategy in response to the increasing transfer fees and player salaries. National draft rules The minimum draft age for the 1990 national draft was 16. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. David Wearne
David Wearne (born 10 May 1970) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the Brisbane Bears in the Australian Football League (AFL). Wearne played his early football at Coorparoo and joined Brisbane's senior list after being picked up in the 1990 pre-season draft. He broke into the team late in the 1990 AFL season and appeared in the final eight rounds of the year, averaging 16 disposals. In 1991 he played in another eight games and was also a rover in the Brisbane reserves side which won the premiership. The Brisbane Football Club, nicknamed the Bears, was a professional Australian rules football club based in Queensland on the Gold Coast (relocated to Brisbane in 1993).
