Conspiracy Of The Tres Antonios
The conspiracy of the three Antonios (1781) ( es, conspiración de los tres Antonios) was a minor failed conspiracy against the Spanish colonial authorities in the captaincy-general of Chile, that was led by two Frenchmen, Antoine Gramusset and Antoine-Alexandre Berney, and a criollo, José Antonio de Rojas. It was so named because all three conspirators shared the same first name. Events In 1780 Antonio Berney was a Frenchman living in Santiago where he worked as a teacher of Latin and Mathematics. He was a constant reader of the Encyclopédie, and inspired by the Enlightenment ideals he formulated a plan to establish Chile as an independent republic. He converted Antonio Gramusset, another Frenchman living in Chile to his ideas, and he in turn enlisted the aid of one of Chile's most prominent citizens, José Antonio de Rojas. Spanish Ship San Pedro De Alcantara
''San Pedro de Alcantara'' was a 64-gun Spanish man-of-war, which sank near Peniche, Portugal, loaded with so much treasure that her shipwreck shocked the financial markets of Spain. The cargo was eventually salvaged, and the scattered remains were investigated in 1988 and 1996. Career ''San Pedro de Alcantara'' was built of mahogany in Cuba in 1770, by an English shipbuilder in Spanish service. She sailed to Peru in 1784, where she loaded about 600 tons of copper, 153 tons of silver and four tons of gold from Peruvian mines. She also carried a collection of ancient ceramics from the Chimu culture, as well as political prisoners from the Túpac Amaru Rebellion (including Túpac Amaru's 12-year-old son) and from the Conspiracy of the Tres Antonios in Chile. Antonio Gramusset
Antonio Gramusset (1740–1784) was a French adventurer living in Chile, and one of the co-conspirators in the Conspiracy of the Tres Antonios. He was born in Premelieu, and arrived to Chile around 1764. Once there, he first tried to become a priest, and later he joined a military regiment composed of foreigners, as a cadet. Soon after he abandoned that career too, in order to try to become rich by renting a parcel of land and dedicating himself to agriculture. He also dabbled as an inventor, and developed an impracticable scheme to supply water to Santiago. In 1780, he joined Antonio Berney and José Antonio de Rojas in a plan to establish Chile as an independent republic. They were soon discovered, denounced and arrested on January 1, 1781.
