Compton Point
Compton Point is a headland in the Queen Charlotte Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada, forming the northwest entrance point to Wells Passage opposite North Broughton Island. Name origin Compton Point, like Compton Island at the southeast end of Queen Charlotte Strait, was named about 1866 by Captain Pender for Pym Nevin Compton of Hampshire. From a Quaker family, she came to Victoria in the employ of the Hudson's Bay Company, working as a clerk. He was serving as a trading clerk on the ''Labouchere'' when he was taken captive by natives in Alaska in August 1862. He was stationed at Port Simpson (Lax Kw'alaams today) and at Fort Rupert Fort Rupert is the site of a former Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) fort on the east coast near the northern tip of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Compton Island is an island in the Queen Charlotte Strait-Johnstone Strait region of the Central Coast of British Columbia, Canada, located in Blackfish Sound to the east of Port McNeill All of Compton Island and three small islands offshore comprise Compton Island Indian Reserve No. 6, a.k.a. Compton 6. Name origin Compton Island was named about 1866 by Captain Pender for Pym Nevin Compton of Hampshire. Daniel Pender
Daniel Pender was a Royal Navy Staff Commander, later captain, who surveyed the Coast of British Columbia aboard , and from 1857 to 1870. Pender was recorded as the second master of the admiralty survey vessel, HMS ''Plumper'', in 1857 when he arrived at Esquimalt. He was promoted as the ship's master in 1860. He was, however, transferred to HMS ''Hecate'' a year later after the Plumper was deemed too small and unsuitable for the coast's waters. When the British government commissioned the Hudson Bay Company to continue the hydraulic survey of the coast, he was given command of the company's ''Beaver''. He replaced Captain George Henry Richards, who was recalled to Britain after he was appointed as the Hydrographer of the Royal Navy. The Hudson's Bay Company (HBC; french: Compagnie de la Baie d'Hudson) is a Canadian retail business group. A fur trading business for much of its existence, HBC now owns and operates retail stores in Canada. The company's namesake business division is Hudson's Bay, commonly referred to as The Bay ( in French). Labouchere (paddle Steamer)
The Labouchere was a paddle steamer in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company, built in 1858 at Green's in Blackwall, London, England. Under the command of Captain J. Trivett it was mostly in service in British Columbia and the rest of the Pacific Northwest in the 1850s and 1860s, including the Stikine lisière in Russian America. In 1859, its then-captain John Swanson was elected by a "celebrated" majority of one (there was only one qualified elector) in the colonial riding of Nanaimo for the Legislative Assembly of the Colony of Vancouver Island.
