Committee On Justice And Human Rights
The Committee on Justice and Human Rights is one of the ten permanent committees of the Pan-African Parliament. It is in charge of law and justice issues in Africa. Functions of the committee: * Assist Parliament in its role of harmonising and coordinating the laws of Member States. * Promote respect for and develop sound principles of freedom, civil liberties, justice, human and peoples' rights and fundamental rights within the Union. Chairperson of the committee is the Hon Abdelahad Gamaleldin (Egypt). The deputy chairperson is the Hon Efigênia dos Santos Lima Clemente (Angola). Rapporteur of the committee is Hon Abdu Katuntu (Uganda). Pan-African Parliament
The Pan-African Parliament (PAP), also known as the African Parliament, is the legislative body of the African Union. It held its inaugural session in March 2004. The Parliament exercises oversight, and has advisory and consultative powers, having lasting for the first five years. Initially the seat of the Pan-African Parliament was in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, but was later moved to Midrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. The goal in establishing the parliament was creating a space where people from all states of Africa could meet, deliberate, and pass some policy on issues that affect the entire continent of Africa. The Parliament is composed of five members per member state that have ratified the Protocol establishing it, including at least one woman per Member State. Abdu Katuntu
Abdu Katuntu (born 3 December 1965) is a Ugandan politician, lawyer currently serving as the Member of Parliament for Bugweri County, Bugweri District. Early life and education Katuntu is a practising lawyer, having received a Bachelor of Law from Makerere University and a diploma of Law from the Law Development Centre. Work experience and political career Katuntu is a former member of the Pan-African Parliament from Uganda and the Rapporteur of the Committee on Justice and Human Rights. Katuntu worked for Kadaga and company advocates which is owned by Rebecca Kadaga. He was a member of Forum for Democratic Change party until 2021. He served as the Shadow Attorney General in the Parliament of Uganda till 2018 and was replaced by Wilfred Niwagaba. Katuntu was first elected into the parliament of Uganda in 2001.
