''Cnaemidophorus rhododactyla'', also known as the rose plume moth, is a moth of the superfamily Pterophoroidea, family Pterophoridae. It is found in the Northern Hemisphere, except for Greenland, Southeast Asia, and most of North Africa. It was first described by Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller, 1775. Description The eggs hatch in the autumn and the larvae initially feed on leaves of roses, overwintering when small, probably in a stem. In May the larvae recommence feeding on the leaves and also flower buds and flowers. The moths fly in July and August, are attracted to light and are one of the most distinctively marked plume moths. It has a wingspan of 18–26 mm. The Pterophoridae or plume moths are a family of Lepidoptera with unusually modified wings. Though they belong to the Apoditrysia like the larger moths and the butterflies, unlike these they are tiny and were formerly included among the assemblage called "microlepidoptera". Description and ecology The forewings of plume moths usually consist of two curved spars with more or less bedraggled bristles trailing behind. This resembles the closely related Alucitidae (many-plumed moths) at first glance, but the latter have a greater number of symmetrical plumes. Hans Daniel Johan Wallengren (8 June 1823 – 25 October 1894) was a Swedish clergyman and entomologist. Biography He was born in Lund, Sweden.
