Clément Giraud
Clément Giraud (born 11 December 1980) is a French professional offshore sailor. Biography Clement lived until his 18th birthday in the Caribbean on the Island of Martinique, where did lots of recreational sailing without ever joining a sailing club. He moved to France living and working on sailing boat in Mandelieu, and then raced semi-professionally, participating four times in the Tour de France à la voile. He has competed in 129 regattas and races, in multihulls and monohulls, racing globally with more than 25 victories and 40 podiums and 135,000 miles covered onboard which includes 20,000 in double handed and 22,000 solo before he competed in the 2020–2021 Vendée Globe The 2020–2021 Vendée Globe was a non-stop round the world yacht race for IMOCA 60 class yachts crewed by only one person. World Sailing (WS) is the world governing body for the sport of sailing recognized by the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). Mini Transat is a solo transatlantic yacht race which typically starts in France and ends in the Caribbean. The race uses small long yachts conforming to the Mini Transat 6.50 class rules which gives considering scope for development More recently this has led to the formation of two divisions within the class: the production class that limits development and costs, and the prototype class which allows for more flexibility in dimensions and technology. Background History Bob Salmon developed the idea of a mini-transatlantic race in the late 1970s in England with the intent of promoting affordable offshore solo racing. It was partially conceived as a response to the trend for bigger and more expensive boats such as sailed in the OSTAR race that seemed to exclude ocean racing for sailors with moderate budgets. The Farr 30 (formerly Mumm 30) was designed by Farr Yacht Design led by Bruce Farr. The first boat was built by Carrol Marine and first launched in 1995. The class was recognised by the World Sailing from 1997 to 2018. History The International Farr 30 One Design Class Association was formed as the owners association to support the class and promote One Design class sailboat racing amongst owners which led to the class becoming an ISAF Recognised Class. This entitles the class to hold World Championships officially recognized by World Sailing. The boat was originally named the Mumm 30 after its original title sponsor Champagne Mumm. The M34 is a French sailboat that was designed by Joubert/Nivelt/Mercier as a one-design racer and first built in 2010. The boat was used as the class for the Tour de France à la voile. Production The design was built by Archambault Boats in France from 2010 until 2013, but it is now out of production. Design The M34 is a racing keelboat, built predominantly of fibreglass with a sandwiched core. It has a 7/8 fractional sloop rig with a carbon fibre keel-stepped mast and fixed bowsprit, and an aluminum boom. The mast has two sets of 20° swept spreaders. The hull has a plumb stem, a raised plumb transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a tiller and a fin keel. It displaces and carries of lead ballast.
