Clavatulidae
Clavatulidae is a taxonomic family of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea. The family is not well differentiated morphologically. Clavatulidae was raised, based on cladistic analysis, from subfamily to the family level by Rosenberg in 1998. It is no longer regarded as a subfamily of Turridae by several malacologists (Kantor, Sysoev).World Register of Marine Species: Clavatulidae
accessed 1 April 2010.
This family has no subfamilies.

General characteristics

This family consists of species with a medium-sized to rather large, fusiform shell. The oblong, pointed is rather high. Th ...

Conoidea
Conoidea is a superfamily of predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks within the suborder Hypsogastropoda. This superfamily is a very large group of marine mollusks, estimated at about 340 recent valid genera and subgenera, and considered by one authority to contain 4,000 named living species. This superfamily includes the turrids, the terebras (also known as auger snails or auger shells) and the cones or cone snails. The phylogenetic relationships within this superfamily are poorly established. Several families (especially the Turridae), subfamilies and genera are thought to be polyphyletic. In contrast to Puillandre's estimate, Bandyopadhyay et al. (2008) estimated that the superfamily Conoidea contains about 10,000 species. Tucker (2004) even speaks of 11,350 species in the group of taxa commonly referred to as turrids.Tucker, J.K. 2004 ''Catalog of recent and fossil turrids (Mollusca: Gastropoda).'' Zootaxa 682:1–1295. 3000 recent taxa are potentially valid specie ...

Clionella
''Clionella'' is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Clavatulidae. Description The shell of the species in this genus is narrowly bucciniform and turriculated. The protoconch is somewhat conical, containing 2 whorls. The whorls are somewhat flattened, longitudinally ribbed with long, flexuous ribs, and have a thick epidermis. The ribs lack subsutural or peripheral processes. The spire of the shell is elevated. The body whorl is truncated. The siphonal canal is scarcely indicated at the broad base of the aperture. The anal sinus is very shallow. The lip has a small infrasutural anal sinus with no distinct parietal tubercle. The operculum has a lateral nucleus. The foot is short, broad, and rounded behind. The eyes are located near the tip of the tentacles. Radula formula (1-1-1), Distribution This marine genus mainly occurs off South Africa. Pusionella Compacta
''Pusionella compacta'' is a species of sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Clavatulidae. Description The shell grows to a length of 26 mm. (Original description) This form differs from the group of '' Clavatula milleti'' (synonym: ''Pusionella milleti'') in her characteristic feature of the sculpture: the continuous vertical spiral suture is missing. They occur only up to the 7th whorl yet and then disappear completely, and as otherwise deviations also occur, so this form must be singled out. The compact spire contains 11–12 whorls. These are slightly rounded and convex. The aperture is the same as in ''Clavatula milleti''. The callus at the anal sinus stands out clearly. Clavatula
''Clavatula'' is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the family Clavatulidae. Description In this genus, the shell is fusiform, with a well-produced spire. The whorls are coronated with tubercles or short spines at the suture;. The aperture is oval. The columellar lip is smooth, arcuate, and callous behind. The outer lip is thin and arcuated, with the anal sinus situated below the sutural coronal. The operculum is semioval with its nucleus about the middle, on the inner side. The foot is large, short and obtuse behind. The eyes are placed externally near the extremity of the tentacles. The radula contains a small unicuspid central tooth with single sharp laterals (formula :1-1-1). The species mostly inhabits the west coast of Africa. Turridae
Turridae is a taxonomic family name for a number of predatory sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Conoidea. MolluscaBase (2018). Turridae H. Adams & A. Adams, 1853 (1838). Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at: http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=152 on 2018-07-22 The family name Turridae was originally given to a very large group of several thousand sea snail species that were thought to be closely related. The family was described with about 700 genus-group taxa and an estimated 10,000 recent and fossil species. However, that original grouping was discovered to be polyphyletic. In recent years, the family Turridae has been much reduced in size, because a number of other families were created to contain the monophyletic lineages that had previously been thought to belong in the same family. The common name ''turrids'' is still used informally to refer to the polyphyletic group. Distribution Species in the family ...

Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=829411 on 2016-06-11 Description (Original description) In this genus the shell is fusiform, with the protoconch conoidal, multispiral and closely coiled. The nepionic (= relating to the stage of development succeeding the embryonic) spire whorls alone are costate and have also an elevated collar below the suture. The more recent whorls become devoid of lyrae or costae, though having throughout densely close-set and subequal microscopic striae, except the body whorl abruptly below the posterior end of the aperture, which is obliquely and rather coarsely lyrate. The siphonal canal is moderate, straight, and, together with the aperture, forms about half the length of the shell. The sinus is broadly ...
