Clarke and Meynell was a theatrical production company in Australia. History Clyde Harold van Straubenzee, (1869–1934), son of Lt-Colonel Frederick van Straubenzee, trained as a doctor, but abandoned medicine for the stage, as Clyde Meynell actor, and (later) theatrical manager. Meynell and John Gunn (c. 1869–1909) founded Strand Comedy Company 1905, leased the Criterion Theatre, Sydney. Gunn was a nephew of Michael Gunn and cousin of George Edwardes. Criterion Theatre, Sydney
The Criterion Theatre was a theatre in Sydney, Australia which was built in 1886 by architect George R Johnson on the south east corner of Pitt and Park streets. It closed in 1935 and the building was demolished. History The Criterion Theatre often referred to as the 'Cri' opened on 27 December 1886. Situated on the south east corner of Pitt and Park streets, Sydney, it was funded by John Solomon and designed by architect George R Johnson. The 'Cri', was Sydney's most famous intimate playhouse at the time with a Neo-Renaissance exterior and a capacity of approximately 991 seats. The 'Cri' was used for drama and music performances for almost 50 years. It closed in 1935, partially as a result of the Depression and competition from the growth of cinemas and was demolished in 1935, to facilitate the widening of Park Street. Michael Ralph Thomas Gunn
Michael Ralph Thomas Gunn (1840 – 24 October 1901) was an Irish businessman and theater manager who built and ran the Gaiety Theatre, Dublin. For several years he was closely involved with Richard D'Oyly Carte, and the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. He invested in some of Carte's ventures and helped manage Carte's theater and touring productions in England while Carte was in the United States. Early years Michael Gunn, the father of Michael Ralph Thomas Gunn, moved to Dublin from Scotland and began work as a piano tuner. His wife Elle was a corsetière. They settled in Fleet Street, where their sons John and Michael were born in 1832 and 1840. They spent three years in Clare Street and then in 1850 opened a business at 13 Westland Row selling pianofortes and harmoniums. Later they expanded into selling and publishing sheet music. George Edwardes
George Joseph Edwardes (né Edwards; 8 October 1855 – 4 October 1915) was an English theatre manager and producer of Irish ancestry who brought a new era in musical theatre to the British stage and beyond. Edwardes started out in theatre management, soon working at a number of West End theatres. By the age of 20, he was managing theatres for Richard D'Oyly Carte. In 1885, Edwardes became a manager at the Gaiety Theatre with John Hollingshead, who soon retired. For the next three decades, Edwardes ruled a theatrical empire including the Gaiety, Daly's Theatre, the Adelphi Theatre and others, and sent touring companies around Britain and abroad. In the early 1890s, Edwardes recognised the changing tastes of musical theatre audiences and led the movement away from burlesque and comic opera to Edwardian musical comedy. Sir Rupert Clarke, 2nd Baronet
Sir Rupert Turner Havelock Clarke, 2nd Baronet (1865–1926), 2nd Baronet of Rupertswood, pastoralist and entrepreneur, member of parliament and company director. He was the son of Sir William Clarke, 1st Baronet, Sir William John Clarke. Sir William was made a baronet by Queen Victoria for the huge sums he had given to various causes. Succeeding to the baronetcy on his father's death in May 1897, Rupert followed him into the Legislative Council of Victoria as member for Southern Province (Victoria), Southern Province, retaining the seat until 1904. John Wren
John Wren (3 April 1871 – 26 October 1953) was an Australian bookmaker, boxing and wrestling promoter, Irish nationalist, land speculator, newspaper owner, racecourse and racehorse owner, soldier, pro-conscriptionist and theatre owner. He became a legendary figure thanks mainly to a fictionalised account of his life in Frank Hardy's novel ''Power Without Glory'', which was also made into a television series. ''The Arcadians'' is an Edwardian musical comedy styled a "Fantastic Musical Play" in three acts with a book by Mark Ambient and Alexander M. Thompson, lyrics by Arthur Wimperis, and music by Lionel Monckton and Howard Talbot. The story concerns some idyllic Arcadians who wish to transform wicked London to a land of truth and simplicity. First produced by Robert Courtneidge, the musical opened at the Shaftesbury Theatre in London, on 29 April 1909, and ran for 809 performances. This was the third longest run for any musical theatre piece up to that time. The production starred Phyllis Dare, Dan Rolyat and Florence Smithson. A Broadway production opened in 1910 and ran for 193 performances, and the piece was toured extensively, and revived professionally, in Britain.
