Chuk Yuen (North) Estate
Chuk Yuen Estate () is a public housing estate in Kowloon, Hong Kong, located north of Wong Tai Sin and underneath Lion Rock. Its site was formerly the Chuk Yuen Resettlement Area. It is divided into Chuk Yuen (North) Estate () and Chuk Yuen (South) Estate (). The two estates have eight blocks each, and were all built in the 1980s. In 1999, some of the flats were sold to tenants through the Tenants Purchase Scheme Phase 2. At the centre of these buildings is a shopping mall, hosting a McDonald's, 7-Eleven, Circle K, three bakeries, a street market, Watsons, a dim sum restaurant, two supermarkets and a sports centre. Beside the mall are two parks: one with a fish pond and a waterfall and the other with basketball courts and football fields. The following is a list of public housing estates in Wong Tai Sin, Kowloon, Hong Kong including Home Ownership Scheme (HOS), Private Sector Participation Scheme (PSPS), Sandwich Class Housing Scheme (SCHS), Flat-for-Sale Scheme (FFSS), and Tenants Purchase Scheme (TPS) estates. History Lok Fu, Wong Tai Sin, Wang Tau Hom, and Tung Tau were home to a large number of public housing blocks built in the 1950s and 1960s to provide accommodation to Hong Kong's burgeoning population of refugee migrants. This type of housing, built in haste with limited resources, was rudimentary. The flats were no more than single rooms and families on each floor shared toilet and bathing facilities. Chuk Yuen (Wong Tai Sin District)
Chuk Yuen () or Chuk Un was a village and an area in New Kowloon of Hong Kong. The area located in the approximate area of present-day Wong Tai Sin. The name now also refers to two public housing estates, Chuk Yuen North and Chuk Yuen South Estates. There is a village in proper Chuk Yuen at the junction of Shatin Pass Road and Lung Cheung Road. History The original village of Chuk Yuen was centred approximately around the current Wong Tai Sin Fire Station, beside Shatin Pass Road. During early British rule of New Kowloon, Shatin Pass Road was a road from a point from Kai Tak Airport to Shatin Pass in the north ridge via villages of Po Kong and Chuk Yuen. A forest of bamboo surrounded the village, and the village's name is derived therefrom - Chuk Yuen means ''bamboo garden'' in Chinese language. Twin Tower () is a 1970s Hong Kong public housing residential block design. In plan, the blocks look like two hollow squares joined at one corner of each square. Each block comprises two "towers" of different heights, although their shapes are the same. The high tower ranges from 24 to 28 stories while the low tower is 21 stories. Home Ownership Scheme
The Home Ownership Scheme (HOS) is a subsidised-sale public housing programme managed by the Hong Kong Housing Authority. It was instituted in the late 1970s as part of the government policy for public housing with two aims – to encourage better-off tenants of rental flats to vacate those flats for re-allocation to families in greater housing need; and also to provide an opportunity for home ownership to families unable to afford to buy in the private sector. Under the scheme, the government sells flats to eligible public housing tenants and to lower-income residents at prices below the market level, with discounts usually between 30 and 40 per cent. It restricts resale of the units in the second-hand market to other families who qualify or, on the open market, after payment of a premium equal to the updated value of the discount given on the original purchase.
