Christiane Pilz
Christiane Pilz (born 3 August 1975) is a German triathlete who competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. Biography Pilz started out both as a sailor and a swimmer for thirteen years, until she began with her triathlon career at the age of twenty. In 1997, she was admitted to the club ''PSV Rostock'', and won several titles at the national championships for both triathlon and duathlon. Pilz reached into the international stage in triathlon, when she placed twelfth at the 1999 ETU Triathlon European Championships in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal, and in 2000, she claimed her first medal at the FISU World University Triathlon Championships in Tiszaújváros, Hungary. Between 2000 and 2004, Pilz took part in several ITU European and World Championships, and had achieved at least five top-ten finishes. Tiszaújváros (; sk, Nové Mesto nad Tisou) is an industrial town in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, Northern Hungary, south-east of Miskolc, near the river Tisza. History Tiszaújváros as a town owes its existence to the industrialization wave that took over the then-socialist Hungary after World War II. The government wanted to speed up industrial development and to create new job opportunities in the north-eastern part of the country. A triathlon is an endurance multisport race consisting of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances. Triathletes compete for fastest overall completion time, racing each segment sequentially with the time transitioning between the disciplines included. The word is of Greek origin, from τρεῖς or ''treis'' (three) and ἆθλος or ''athlos'' (competition). The sport originated in the late 1970s in Southern California as sports clubs and individuals developed the sport. This history has meant that variations of the sport were created and still exist. It also led to other three-stage races using the name triathlon despite not being continuous or not consisting of swim, bike, and run elements. The women's triathlon was part of the triathlon at the 2008 Summer Olympics programme. It was the third appearance of the event, which was established in 2000. The competition was held on Monday, August 18, 2008 at the Triathlon Venue at the Ming Tomb Reservoir in Shisanling. Fifty-five triathletes from thirty nations competed. For the first time in Olympic history, all three medalists finished the race in less than two hours. Competition format The race was held over the "international distance" (also called "Olympic distance") and consisted of swimming, , road cycling, and road running.
