Chobham Rugby Football Club
Chobham Rugby Football Club; founded in 1967, is a community rugby union club run by volunteers and based at Fowlers Wells in Chobham, Surrey. Chobham RFC has more than 2000 members with players in senior (men and women), boys and girls minis and juniors, walking and touch rugby teams participating in a full annual programme of fixtures; including friendly games, leagues and festivals. They also run a Mixed Ability Team – The Surrey Chargers. The 1st XV team participates in Regional 2 Thames; the sixth tier of the English rugby union system, having won Counties 1 (Surrey/ Sussex) in 2022-23. Their highest ever league position finish was second in London 1 in 2014–15; tier six. Club colours Scarlet and gold have been part of the club's playing strip for many years and taken from the Courage Brewery which helped found the club in 1967. The shirt and shorts mainly dark blue. The Surrey County Rugby Football Union is the union responsible for rugby union in the county of Surrey, England, and is one of the constituent bodies of the national Rugby Football Union having been formed in 1879. History Early years of County representative team The earliest recorded game played by a team purporting to represent Surrey under rugby union auspices was played before the Surrey County Club has been formed. This was played on 21 February 1878 against Middlesex and won by Surrey with a try scored by AS Trevor. Formation of the County Club On 22 December 1879, a meeting was held at the York Hotel, on Waterloo Road, South London (then in Surrey), at which the County Club was formed. Chobham
Chobham is a village and civil parish in the Borough of Surrey Heath in Surrey, England. The village has a small high street area, specialising in traditional trades and motor trades. The River Bourne and its northern tributary, the Hale, Mill Bourne or Windle Brook run through the village. Chobham lost a large minority of its land to West End, in 1968, which has a larger population and was long associated with another parish. London 1 South
London 1 South was an English level 6 rugby union regional league for rugby clubs in London and the south-east of England including sides from East Sussex, south Essex, south Greater London, Hampshire, Kent, Surrey and West Sussex. When this division began in 1987 it was known as London 2 South, changing to its current name ahead of the 2009–10 season. It was the feeder league for London & South East Premier into which the champion team each season is promoted. The second-placed team entered a play-off against the runner-up of London 1 North. Three teams were relegated into a mixture of London 2 South East and London 2 South West. Promotion and relegation are in place throughout the system. Courage Brewery was an English brewery, founded by John Courage in 1787 in London, England. History Courage & Co Ltd was started by John Courage at the Anchor Brewhouse in Horsleydown, Bermondsey in 1787. He was a Scottish shipping agent of French Huguenot descent. It became Courage & Donaldson in 1797. By 1888, it had been registered simply as Courage. In 1955, the company merged with Barclay, Perkins & Co Ltd (who were located at the nearby Anchor Brewery) to become Courage, Barclay & Co Ltd. London 2 South West
London 2 South West is an English level 7 Rugby Union League. When this division began in 1987 it was known as London 3 South West, changing to its current name ahead of the 2009–10 season. The division is made up of teams predominantly from south-west London, Surrey, and Hampshire. The 12 teams play home and away matches from September through to April. Each year all clubs in the division are also invited to take part in the RFU Intermediate Cup - a level 7 national competition. Surrey Trophy
The Surrey Trophy is an annual rugby union knock-out club competition organized by the Surrey Rugby Football Union. It was introduced in 2009 and the inaugural winners were London Irish Wild Geese. It is the second most important rugby union cup competition in Surrey, behind the Surrey Cup but ahead of the Surrey Shield and Surrey Bowl. The Surrey Trophy is currently open to club sides based in Surrey and parts of south London, that play in tier 6 (London 1 South), tier 7 (London 2 South West) and tier 8 (London 3 South West) of the English rugby union league system. The current format is a knockout cup with a quarter-final, semi-finals and a final to be held at Molesey Road ( Esher's home ground) in May on the same date and same venue as the other Surrey finals.
