Chitistone Mountain
Chitistone Mountain is a 6,844-foot (2,086-meter) mountain summit located at the southeastern edge of the Wrangell Mountains, in the U.S. state of Alaska. The peak is situated in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve, east-northeast of McCarthy, east of Bonanza Peak, and north of Williams Peak, where it is wedged between the confluence of the Nizina River and Chitistone River. The mountain takes its name from the Chitistone River as reported in 1959 by the United States Geological Survey. In turn, the Chitistone River which is part of the Copper River drainage basin, was derived from "''chiti''," an Indian word for copper, added to the English word "stone." The area west of this mountain at the Kennecott Mines was actively mining copper from 1911 through 1938. Wrangell Mountains
The Wrangell Mountains are a high mountain range of eastern Alaska in the United States. Much of the range is included in Wrangell-Saint Elias National Park and Preserve. The Wrangell Mountains are almost entirely volcanic in origin, and they include the second and third highest volcanoes in the United States, Mount Blackburn and Mount Sanford. The range takes its name from Mount Wrangell, which is one of the largest andesite shield volcanoes in the world, and also the only presently active volcano in the range. The Wrangell Mountains comprise most of the Wrangell Volcanic Field, which also extends into the neighboring Saint Elias Mountains and the Yukon Territory in Canada. Köppen Climate Classification
The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by German-Russian climatologist Wladimir Köppen (1846–1940) in 1884, with several later modifications by Köppen, notably in 1918 and 1936. Later, the climatologist Rudolf Geiger (1894–1981) introduced some changes to the classification system, which is thus sometimes called the Köppen–Geiger climate classification system. Kennecott, Alaska
Kennecott, also known as Kennicott and Kennecott Mines, is an abandoned mining camp in the Copper River Census Area in the U.S. state of Alaska that was the center of activity for several copper mines. It is located beside the Kennicott Glacier, northeast of Valdez, inside Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve. The camp and mines are now a National Historic Landmark District administered by the National Park Service. Orographic lift occurs when an air mass is forced from a low elevation to a higher elevation as it moves over rising terrain. Nizina River
Nizina River is the largest tributary of the Chitina River in the U.S. state of Alaska. It is located in the Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve. Geography The stream heads in Nizina Glacier, flows southward about to a point near the mouth of Dan Creek, where it takes an easterly course, which it follows for about to its junction with the Chitina.
